Welcome And Scripture On Timing
Chris GraingerWelcome to The Line Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men. We're hungry to be the leaders, God intends you to be. I'm your host, Chris Granger. Let's jump in. All right, you guys. This is a special episode, just like where we're starting to do these more regularly, and we're hopefully we're gonna be able to do them for you on a consistent basis. Where I we get to uh ask an elder, and he's my mentor, by the way. Uh, but before we get to that, the scripture of the week this week is Ecclesiastes chapter three. Anytime you're in Ecclesiastes is a fun time, right? So verse 11 says he's made everything appropriate in his time. He's also set eternity in their heart without the possibility that mankind will find out of the of the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. So it took a lot of time this week, fellas, really speaking to the idea of being patient. And trust me, that is not a topic. That is not a fruit that I produce a lot of. Patience is something I have to constantly work on. And guys, so hopefully, uh, if you feel convicted this week, don't shoot me. I'm just a messenger. I didn't write the God's word, I just deliver it. But so if you have if you're struggling with it, though, that could be an opportunity for you to grow. And just look at it that way, fellas.
How To Connect With The Community
Chris GraingerSo uh, and then for other other ways to connect with us, guys on from a podcast standpoint is every day we do the daily spiritual kickoff. So go to thelinewithin.us and hop in on that, fellas, and get started with it now. So let's get into it with
Buck On Salvation And What's Next
Chris GraingerBuck. So, Buck, how you doing this morning, sir?
Buck JacobsDoing great, Chris. Looking forward to our discussion today and uh trying to get things straight in my own head of uh uh what what will be really helpful to uh you know the average Christian guy. Right. Um I've been at this, so I've been walking in the uh in the spirit for over 50 years. I've been in tons of different churches because of uh professional moves and so forth. And there are some commonalities that uh I've I've experienced that I think are a lack in the overall teaching of the typical uh today uh Christian evangelical church. Okay. Uh there's a good job done of teaching the plan of salvation. And uh you know, most of the churches that I've gone to have been Baptist churches, and so they have a um counter or a uh call every week to come forward and receive Christ. And they they do that well. But the question always becomes, well, what's next? So I'm saved. I remember when it happened for me. I I had a real profound spiritual experience in receiving my salvation. I started to cry. I thought about all I had been uh the guilt I'd been carrying for things that I discerned that were out of God's will for many years. I was 35 years old, and I remember that really well. And and then that day, after I finished crying, which I didn't have a lot of practice with, I sat back on my couch and I thought, well, what do I do now? Should I go out and find a church, just any church, or a pastor, find a pastor I could talk to? And those ideas, God didn't really touch my heart with those ideas. So I reread the Psalms I'd read the night before and I just kind of sat there and meditated the whole day on well, what happened? And um, you know, I I I had no idea what was next. And I never really got into a place where anyone had an idea except when I went to work for my best friend, who was four years ahead of me down the narrow path. Uh he sort of took the lead and and we had Bible studies every morning in the company and stuff. Okay, we just kind of looked to him, and I tell you the truth, he was a little more ground in me, but he wasn't really digging into the the Bible either. And so as the years went by, uh things began to just click to me that, well, I never knew that. Well, well, I didn't know that. I better dig into that. And I got to thinking, well, probably the average guy, just a guy, you know, sitting in a church somewhere, he's having those same kind of thoughts. How do I connect today with that day and also connect it with the day when my tripper on the planet ends, you know, and I go to heaven. I know I'm going to heaven because I'm saved. But what what between now and then?
Eternal Lifeline And Future Review
Buck JacobsI worked up a seminar back then myself to try to share it with other people, and I called it my eternal lifeline. And I took and I drew a drew a line across the page, you know, and put some X's on the line like physical birth, new birth, some markers. Right. Yes. And they're absolute. They're they've either already happened or they're gonna happen for sure. Right. And uh one of the things that I I put on the uh uh that that's gonna happen after we uh finish our physical race is we're gonna have a situation where we sit down with Jesus and we review what we did with the uh opportunity that He died to give us. Right. Um, we talked last week just briefly about the the short little scripture with so much meaning in Ephesians chapter two, verse ten, which says, We're uh Christ we're God's work created in Christ Jesus, to do good works which he prepared before us and to walk in. And uh those that preparation work of of that God has already done has kind of prepared the line that we need to follow on until we go to go to meet him. And uh that's uh kind of a hard onset hard concept to get a hold of, yeah, because it w what what we're saying is that we're actually walking two lives at the same time. There's the physical life, which is what we're experiencing right now, that has to do with all the things that we can touch, see, and so forth, the physical life, and we'll walk that. And part of our walk there is to do those things that God's prepared for us to do that connect to eternity. Actually, there are many things that we do while we're here in the physical life that will connect to eternity. The Bible talks about the possibility that there's the the the truth that there are going to be rewards in heaven. And uh I don't know what they're gonna be. I do know who's gonna award them, and I'll trust him for they'll be plenty nice, you know. So that's not a problem. Anyway, so there are things that incur in our life day by day, moment by moment, between new birth and physical death that will impact what we experience in heaven. And so I think very few people are talking about that in today's contemporary church. We talk about we got saved, we're going to heaven, and we know that. Right. And but nobody's saying there's there's these eternal consequences to what we do. The the typical attitude I run into is, well, I punch my ticket for heaven, I'm good. And so I just live for myself between now and then. That's not true. So I think if we talk about that a little bit, uh we we can help some folks. That uh it's not spooky, it's not, you know, way out there stuff, it's right in the Bible, as clear as anything else in the Bible. There's a place that's called the judgment seat of Christ. And that's the place where Jesus Himself will judge the judgments, the works that we did. And we're gonna do lots of different works. If we live, you know, forty, fifty, sixty years between new birth and and uh eternal life, we're gonna do a lot of things that you could could consider to call works, but not all of them are gonna have eternal value. Right. Some will. The Bible explains it really clear in um in Corinthians chapter three uh verses eleven through fifteen. And I would really encourage all of our participants today to get in their Bible and read that passage of scripture and and try to meditate on it a little bit not a little bit, a lot, to try to understand it. Um it says no that we have we are given a platform for living, and that platform is Jesus Christ. So all the things that we do really reflect back to Jesus, and the things that some things are really important, those are things that have eternal significance, and some things are not, at least in the eternal sense. There are things that have what the Bible would call temporal importance, that's those are earthly things. It's it's important to pay our taxes, it's important to obey the speed limit, you know, especially if you get pulled over. But those things are important, but they're not a they're not going to be eternal. And uh we we'll talk later about what is eternal, but today I the point I was hoping to lead into is that we're actually leading two lives at the same time. Right. And the life that's most familiar to us is our fleshly life or our our life in on earth. And that's because we can see, feel, smell, and touch things now that are uh they're actually done, it's all done as part of our flesh. It's not a spiritual thing to smell. You just smell, you know. It's not maybe good or bad, but it's not eternal. And um uh the fact is that at every day and every moment we may be doing something that has value in one or value in the other. And it's important that we learn to discern those and be able to judge them ourselves so that we can course correct. If we find ourselves out of the spiritual or out of the eternal, we want to jump back in, because in probably forty, fifty years or less, that's gonna be all that's important to us.
Chris GraingerThat's right.
Buck JacobsBecause when we leave this earth, we take with us the package that we've sent uh they're taking carrying with us, and the one that we've sent ahead.
Chris GraingerYes, sir.
Buck JacobsWhat we send ahead are the good works that God has designed for us. They may not be the same good works that the world would urge us to do. Right. But they're works that God has given us to do that are spiritual by nature and suggested and probably um nourished by the Holy Spirit, you know. So that's that's you know, that's laying out. We talk about what's really important that we do day by day while we while we are here, what's really the most important stuff we can do. And it won't be things that the world tells us are really important. So what are the kinds of things that the world tells us that are gonna be really important that we do? Yeah.
Chris GraingerWell
Works Tested By Fire
Chris GraingerI mean maybe it'd be helpful too, Buck. I pulled up the scripture right here for to read that first Corinthians chapter three. If you'd like for me to, I can read those couple of verses just to give you guys that foundation. Um and starting verse 11, you know, and I'm reading from the NASB guys, that's the one I teach guys of primarily, but it says, For no man can lay a foundation, that's what the Buck was talking about, other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now, if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man's work will become evident, for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire. The fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. And if a man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved yet as through the fire. So I think that's the that's the scripture you were pointing us to earlier.
Buck JacobsYeah, let's look at that a little bit. There's these two kinds, different kinds of work. Right. One is uh represented by wood, hay, and stubble, and that stuff burns quick. You know, it goes right at it. And the other is gold, silver, and precious gems. So there's a very, very value difference in the result of the works that we do. Right. So we sit if we sit and just watch a an old TV show an hour, you know, that may not be evil, but neither is it necessarily good. Right. We can just waste the time. And really, in many ways, time is a common uh uh quality, quantity, or um that we all have. We all have the same form. Right, the great equalizer. And we can uh the fact that God has given us free will means that we have the ability to choose one or the
Taking Thoughts Captive To Christ
Buck Jacobsother.
Chris GraingerRight.
Buck JacobsAnd another thing that He's done, he's given us the freedom, the opportunity, and the blessing to take all of our thoughts captive to Jesus Christ. Now, you know, we got hundreds, maybe thousands of s thoughts that are bouncing around our head. They're stimulated by things around us and things we have seen, and you know, some of those things are good. We may be stimulated by something that came from one of the messages our pastor preached on Sunday about going to your next door neighbor and asking, Do they know Jesus? If the Holy Spirit bears witness to that and you get feeling you should do that, you didn't mean it to do it. You've been thinking about that. Well then that that thought comes from God. Yeah. Because it does the devil doesn't do it. Right. There's the thoughts that come to us that stimulate us to slip into a short session of pornography or to have too much to drink or anything that's really harmful, God never sends those kind of thoughts. And Jesus' spirit will always help us uh edit those thoughts. Uh I've been at it for a lot of years now, and it's really cool how I'm still tempted. You'd think that at 88 years old, walking with the Lord for 55 years, then I wouldn't be tempted anymore.
Chris GraingerNever stop.
Buck JacobsNo. I was teaching in a conference one time, and at the end we had some QA, and one of the guys in the in the audience said, Well, uh uh, how old do you have to be before the temptation quits? And uh I said, I don't know, but I know it's more than 78, because I was 78 at the time.
Chris GraingerI remember you telling me that story, because I think you it had to do with like like sexual temptation too, because a guy was trying to talk about that, and it's like, no, bro, when you're you still got a heart and you're still and it's still beating, and the temptation is gonna be there.
Buck JacobsI imagine even if you're blind, it's still there.
Chris GraingerThat's right. That's right.
Buck JacobsSo those things, you know, there's a lot of temptation that comes around us, both good and bad. The Holy Spirit is always trying to prompt us towards God's will and doing the things that God created us for. And we could talk about that for just a minute, too. You know, when scripture speaks of things in that way that God created beforehand for us to walk in. That has to do with our shape and destiny, because God did that before he created the world and the universe beforehand with God. You know, God at one point was just God and the spirit in eternity, nothing there. And then God spoke, and boom, there's the planets and the stars and earth. And so a little later he reached down the dirt and he pulled out a man, you know, and called him Adam. And uh then a little later a lady, then that's when things went bad. No, I'm not just teasing about that. And then he said, You two shall become one. And he gave them the charge to populate the earth. And so anyway, he did that, and then that's when uh life on earth began. That's when they were the first humans that had the um the call to be tempted. I mean that when T Satan tempted Eve, that was the first picture of how life works. Adam and Eve are going along just great. Things are perfect, the garden is beautiful, fruit is beautiful, they can eat anything in the garden, they're not they have no la of any good thing. Only one command commandment, don't eat of that tree of good and evil. Right. Now I would think, well that's simple. I just look around at all these great things that I have and I kind of take freely of, and I would never go to the tree of good and evil, but that's probably not true for me. It wasn't true for Eve. You know, she looked and it looked good, and so that that starts with a thought. The first thought came to Eve. Man, that looks good. Yeah. What but God said not to eat it. The devil heard her thought, and he said, Oh, he didn't say that. He didn't mean that, did he? He wouldn't deprive you of that. And of course that was the primo temptation of all time. Yeah. And she took the fruit, she ate it, she gave some to Adam, and sin entered the world, and you can just see the the result of sin and what the people uh did with it. You know. Cain slayed Abel and so forth, and it goes on from there to you and uh today. So the um the good and evil and the the the temptations are the mix of thoughts that come to us. And our life story is kind of written in those that we entertain, because uh here's another one. Every sin and every righteous act begins with a single thought that's given place in our mind. Thought comes in our mind, you need to show your wife some tender love today. She's not doing so good. That isn't from the devil, that's from God. And we d we do that in obedience to the Holy Spirit, and there just may be a reward set aside in heaven for our obedience. That's my belief anyway, that God always reward rewards obedience and he never rewards disobedience. So not at all. Whether we know it or not.
Chris GraingerRight.
Buck JacobsSo go ahead.
Chris GraingerI was gonna say that single thought too. That's the thing that gets I see so many guys that it's we have to recognize that. You know, uh just recently there was uh an owner of a football team and I don't know if you saw this, but he he he got he he got uh he went to see a prostitute in a uh trailer park in a different state. I mean a completely different state. And someone's asked me, like, well how how do you think that happened? Well it started with a thought period there and then and then with that, I mean he didn't just wake up that morning and say, today's the day I'm gonna ruin my life, you know, and my marriage. But it it starts there and then it's it's the boundaries and the standards and everything goes away. And you mention pornography. I'm sure, I am sure, I'd be willing to bet a year's salary that if you looked at this this guy's devices, he have he was watching pornography, and all these things lead to that's that's what led him to that trailer park for as finding a prostitute as a billionaire. So it's just like, wait a minute now. That's a that's a pretty slippery slogan. Like, wait a minute. I I think all of us are about two drinks and a wink away from a bad decision. You know?
Buck JacobsThat's why I had to quit drinking. That's right. You know, Bible didn't say it was sinful to have a drink, but I knew that it was sin was down the path. For me, not for everybody. Not for everybody. I mean, right. Yeah, right.
Chris GraingerSo it's just it's just amazing to me, you know, how how quickly and then how how so many guys that I talk with think that, you know, that happened to them, but it can't happen to me. Wait, wait a minute now, the Bible shows something very different, and we have to be aware of this because it's not all of a sudden you're just gonna wake up and things are gonna be right. You have to put in the work and do and and be obedient to the to the Holy Spirit, and then that's when we're walking, and that's when we're gonna see the fruit, and I think that's what you're alluding to.
Buck JacobsAmen. Amen. The idea of, for instance, taking your thoughts captive to Christ, first you gotta r kinda catch yourself thinking two ways at the same time. Sure. And you realize that's that that happens. And then you gotta start to try. Ask God to help help me judge my thoughts, Lord. Let me take help me take 'em to Jesus. And let's see, can we find the scripture? I think it's in Ephesians chapter six, where we talk about taking every thought captive to Jesus. I might be wrong, but I think it's it in there. And that's another one. If we think about the uh judgment seat of Christ, that's where our works are going to be judged, then we can also think about the tools that God gives us to have a good report uh at that.
Chris GraingerYeah, I mean it's funny too. Just yesterday uh I went on a walk in the at our local trail. And the first half book, I'm sitting there and I complained the whole time on the first half of this walk, and it's a mile and a half loop. And I was just complaining about stuff that wasn't going right, and things that were frustrating me, and this is not happening. I can't believe my wife did this, and I can't believe my kids did this and all this, and you know, the ministry problems we're having and all this, that I got halfway in the Holy Spirit. I felt to say, Are you done? I was like, Yeah, I'm I'm done. I'm done on my stinking, thinking. And he was like, All right, now the second half of this walk, won't you just praise me for the good things that I have done? And I so I did that for the second half. And when I came came out of the woods, I was a different man than what before I went into the woods. Yeah, absolutely. You know, but I took a that took an actual stop. I that had to stink I had to stop that train of thought, and the Holy Spirit convicted me to stop it and then redirect it to what he wanted me to think about and what he was like. Absolutely. And it just it doesn't just it doesn't just naturally happen. I mean you it takes you know listening to the spirit and then taking the steps of obedience. That one just it literally happened yesterday.
Buck JacobsAbsolutely. And that's a great example, Chris. And it does, it's hard in a sense. Yeah. Because the flesh is strong and the devil is smart. The devil knows where we're weak, he knows where to attack us with just thus and we thought. Great example of that is King David. You
David Bathsheba And The First Look
Buck Jacobsknow, King David came home from the wars. He wasn't supposed to do that, but he did. And he was up on the rooftop taking a sunbath, and he decided to get up and take a look over the wall.
Chris GraingerOh, we can talk about this one.
Buck JacobsYeah. Yeah. He took a look over the wall, what did he see? What did the what did the damn devil have prepared for him? Bathsheba, a beautiful woman, taking a bath without any clothes on. Yeah. And he looked at her, and what do you suppose came into his mind? All in, I'm the king. I can have that if I want it.
Chris GraingerThat's right.
Buck JacobsI want it, I'm gonna get it. So he sent the servant down, brought her up, committed adultery with her, all with the seed of just that first thought. Yeah. And from that time on, his life was never the same. He never had happiness, and the rest of his life you read the whole story of David and his children better betrayed him, and all kinds of bad stuff happened. God f eventually uh God did forgive him. He fathered a child with Bathsheba, and that baby died, in spite of the fact that David prayed and prayed and wept, he still died. And the rest of his life, he was betrayed by his son, uh, and he didn't have the life he had before, as fruit from just one stinking thought. Well, it looks good and I can have it. And so I think I will. And um man, I'd I read that years ago, and I thought, well, if that can happen to David, it can happen to me. That's right.
Chris GraingerI don't know where to And think about too, like the the reason he was in that position is because he was being lazy.
Buck JacobsYeah.
Chris GraingerHe was lazy, he wasn't out in the battle where he should have been, leading his people, doing what the man uh God called him to do. He was he was abdicating his responsibility, and a and a man that's uh idleness and it's the it's the devil's workshop. We know that. I mean, it's so true. And then that happened. I mean, so uh and then I mean what and then the the rabbit trail will go down to cover it up. I mean, he killed the guy, uh her husband. I mean it's just it's like wow. I mean, and that verse was uh that Buck's been talking about the second Corinthians 10 5, talking about uh raising up, we're destroying speculations, every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. I think that was the one you were mentioning. Yeah, that's it.
Buck JacobsThat's where
Daily Practices For Real Freedom
Buck Jacobsit's actually taking them to Christ to captive to Christ. The way I do, the way it works with me, the thought comes, and I I realize what it is and where it's coming from. Uh-huh. And I'm saying, Lord, forgive me for giving that thought any time at all. I'm bringing it to you. Will you take it from me, please? Right. He always does. Yes. He always does. I may have to do it a couple times if it's strong, you know, but it always goes. And I don't I I don't remember a time that I've been active on that, you know, in the l near future. Right. And then in the past there was other things before I met the Lord. Those are those are a different story. But so learning to take learning to to uh understand that we are gonna constantly be temp tempted by things that are attractive. The devil doesn't uh tempt us with ugly women. You know, he things that are attractive, they're like boxes wrapped up in a pretty package and we open it and just a stink comes out of it. Um that's what uh what the devil uses on us. But my habit is I try to keep my thoughts before the Lord. Yeah. I get up in the morning and I have a daily quiet time where I read the word and I pray and I meditate on different scriptures, and um I try to live in that presence of God during the day. Now uh please understand I'm not real good at it. Uh uh I'm a struggling sinner, saved by grace, but he's given me some tools that I'm trying to use. I'm in the Bible every day. The Bible's the greatest defense, it lays out everything, you know, that uh it's an offense to God and uh gives us the way out. And so we can we can arm ourselves, and I guess it's Ephesians 6 where the Bible talks about the armor of God. Right. And uh we can we can think meditate on those things too. What does it mean? The belt of salvation and maybe it's the helmet of salvation. I haven't looked at it lately, but I know there's like six tools that we can use there. So I guess guys, the things that we're trying to talk about today is that the reality of temptation, the truth that we are walking in two worlds at the same time, the world of the flesh and the world of the kingdom, and that we have a battle to stay uh on that right track. The devil doesn't want any part of us walking on the narrow path of path that leads to life abundant. And he'll knock us off by trying to distract us with thoughts, temptations, and and he's very smart and he's very strong, but he who is in me is greater than he who's in the world. Amen. Our Savior in us can always cut him off. Right. And protect and that way he protects us.
Chris GraingerRight. Love it, Buck. Well, I do think we've covered that will you is it is that a good place to put a pen in it for it until next time, Buck?
Dad Jokes And The Week's Question
Chris GraingerYeah, we can do it. All right, guys. Well, Buck, thank you so much. Yeah, I love these conversations and hopefully I know they're gonna be a lot of encouragement to you guys as well, and we'll keep diving into and and and and sharing topics with you guys. Buck, I we meant I told you on these episodes we do like to do dad jokes. Did you bring a dead joke to this one? If not, I got two for you, but I didn't I didn't know if you had any dad jokes or not.
Buck JacobsDead jokes less than let me think. Um no. I forgot. I forgot, but I'll have one for you.
Chris GraingerAll right, then I got two of them run by you. So the the first one is uh why can't your nose be 12 inches long? See do you know why a nose is not 12 inches long, but well, mine isn't because I never tell a lie. Well, if it's 12 inches long, it'd be a foot. So there you go. So that's that one.
Buck JacobsThat's a that's a funny mental picture.
Chris GraingerThere you go. There you go. And the second one is why did the math book look sad? So I don't know if you enjoyed math in school or not, Buck, but well, you know why math books are so are look sad most of the time? No, I don't know. They have too many problems. So there you go.
Buck JacobsYou gotta loan loan me your joke book, one of these. There you go.
Chris GraingerThere you go. Well, John Murray sent me those jokes. So, John, thank you for those, brother. It's all they're awesome. So uh we'll put those in the lion, the lion's stand and let the guys vote on them. And which one did you like best? Did you like the foot one or the uh the math one?
Buck JacobsUh I like the math one.
Chris GraingerOkay. There you go. There you go.
Buck JacobsIt's just too hard to imagine everybody walking around with.
Chris GraingerThat's it. That's it. All right, guys. So the question of the week is where in your life are you struggling to trust God's timing? So wherever that is, fellas, you just just remember his timing's perfect. I've just never seen it where God shows up early. So I mean, just keep that in mind. So just keep keep leaning and doing what he's called you to do, particularly the things that Buck and I talked about today, and thinking about the race that you're running and what's before you. And and other than that, Buck, anything else you'd like to share?
Buck JacobsWell, that's another thing that kind of connects the dots. That's what we're going to try to do. I mean, we only have one purpose of doing these, and that's to help our brothers walk closer to Jesus, because we've been uh we've been made aware of how good that that is and how bad the alternative is. Amen. That's the only reason that we're doing a this podcast is that we've been doing uh walking with the Lord for a good bit of time, and we have proven uh his word is true and he'll do what he says he'll do. And trusting in him uh is the greatest way to live the best life possible.
Chris GraingerAmen to that. Amen to that. Well, Buck, thank you again for today, guys. Keep coming

Sexual Integrity Support Group Offer
Chris Graingertime to stop battling pornography, lust, and temptation alone. We're done sitting on the sidelines, seeing shame win, and hearing from guys that are fighting private wars with no backup. So we decided it's time to fight back. We have our sexual integrity support group, which is a confidential space inside the lion's den for men who are ready to step into the light and pursue real freedom. This isn't just for guys in crisis, by the way. It's for any man who's tired of the cycle, who's tired of living in secret, who's tired of saying this is gonna be the last time. Look, most guys don't need another app or some rules. They need some brothers to come alongside them to say you're not the only one. This doesn't define you. And freedom is possible. So look, inside our group, you're gonna find a confidential, judgment-free forum to engage and ask questions. You'll have honest conversations without condemnation. And you'll also have a monthly call with a trusted guide. So look, this isn't just about stopping pornography, it's about becoming a man of integrity, a man aligned, a man who lives in freedom, not secrecy. And you don't have to clean yourself up first to come, you just have to step in. So our sexual integrity support group is found inside the lion's den. And you can start that today with a 30 day free trial. So if you're ready to stop fighting alone and need that extra support, start your 30 day free trial right now at thelionwithin.us. That's thhelionwithin.us, and step inside the lion's den.
