The Lion Within Us - Leadership for Christian Men
Christian men are in a battle for their lives. Satan will do everything possible to destroy them. The Lion Within Us is a community that provides encouragement to become the leaders God intends us to be. Our main focus lies within three categories: Health (Mental/Physical), Wealth (Careers/Finances) and Self (Husbands/Fathers/Brothers in Christ). By sharpening these areas of our lives, we can find the strength needed to stand firm in our faith and unleash the Lion Within.

Steven Pennypacker joins me for a member spotlight that’s equal parts sobering and hopeful. He walks through years of “almost” moments, including a brother’s liver transplant, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a stroke, bladder cancer, and watching his wife endure serious health challenges. Through it all, God’s patience kept showing up until one night Stephen finally surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and never looked back. If you’re searching for a real Christian testimony about faith after illness, this one will stick with you.

Chris GraingerWelcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I'm your host, Chris Granger. Let's jump in. All right, guys, it's your fun Friday member spotlight. But before you get to meet our awesome member, we got you. We always go through the scripture at the Lion Within Us. And this week, the scriptures in 2 Timothy chapter 1, verse 5. It says, For I'm mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelled in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. And I'm sure that it is in you as well. And this week, guys, we've been talking really heavily on the idea of raising spiritually strong kids and why we need to speak that into our life. And that your number one ministry starts in your home. You know, too often we start thinking outside, and wait a minute, the first thing God's uh put put us in charge of is those underneath our roof, right? How we how do we steward that? How do we spend time with them? So go listen to the podcast this week, fellas. Hopefully you'll be encouraged by it. And then as a reminder for you fellas out there, we have what's called the daily spiritual kickoff. That's a free way to lion within us, serves guys, day in and day out. As a matter of fact, I was in a meeting this morning, we were looking at it. We've done over 835 spiritual kickoffs. Like, guys, that and that was up to this. We're recording this in in August. So just think about that. 835 times that we've opened up God's Word, read pieces of God's Word together, and then tried to help you simplify and apply to your life. I mean, we are prolific Monday through Friday. I've done a SKO from the hospital boys. I mean, whatever it takes, we're gonna figure out a way to get God's word into you each and every day. So go to a linewithin.us right now, get signed up for it. It's free, it has a prayer meeting. We have those every Monday. We invite you to pray with us and let us pray for you. So, guys, no reasons to to stop or to hesitate right here. Lean into it. And then if you're in a continental U.S., we have a free gift we'd like to

Stephen’s Testimony And God’s Patience
Chris Graingerwe get to I get it's a pleasure for on my end to introduce you guys to Stephen Pennypackers. How are you doing today, Stephen?
Steven PennypackerI'm doing well. Doing well, doing awesome. Yeah, I'm happy you asked. Asked me to be here.
Chris GraingerHey, I'm looking forward to it, looking forward to it. And and I mean, maybe if you don't mind, get us started with just a little bit of your testimony. How'd you come to know the Lord? I know we're we're we live relatively close to each other here in North Carolina as well, so I'm sure you'll get to that. But let's love to hear a little bit about you, bud.
Steven PennypackerYeah, sure. Um, I I was asked Christ to be my savior about uh seven years ago. So I went through my life um um knowing who God was, but not really being involved with you know with getting to understand what Jesus meant and everything like that. I I heard of Jesus, but there was just there was no connection there. And I felt that throughout my life, I thought about this just about a month ago that uh God was showing me uh patience by being patient with me. You know, you understand what I'm saying? So I am I just um up until about age 47, I I would have had no health problems, nothing at all. And then all of a sudden things just went kind of went haywire. And I had you know, I had plenty of times for to thank God and and to accept Christ as my savior, but I didn't. Um in 2007, I well, actually, this started out when my brother had to have a liver transplant, and uh, we were really concerned about that because it came right down to the wire on him where his liver was almost completely failed. And it wasn't from drinking or anything, it was a genetic thing. Uh and then about a year later, and by the way, he's still he's still kicking after 19 years, so and he's 70 years old, so uh it's it's really great. So God gave us a big blessing there. Um a year later, I was contracted Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which it was uh was kind of rough, but it was only lasted two weeks, and uh uh unlike Lyme disease, which is uh the bad gift that keeps on giving, you know. Um about uh two years later, I had a stroke. Oh man uh and my wife uh, out of the grace of God got me to the hospital on time, or called the ambulance, got me to the hospital. I was able to receive the uh clot busting drug, uh TPA, and three days later I was able to walk out of the hospital, uh, which again was just a blessing, but I just didn't acknowledge it. Uh about six months later, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. So that was another chance uh for me to you know go to God, and I'm sure I did asking for healing, sure, but not really, you know, not really giving it all to him. Uh fortunately, after three surgeries and some chemotherapy, I've been cancer free. Uh my wife has gone through some things as well uh during that time uh where she actually uh had to have her colon removed. So all that, and God just kept pressing. And I thank God every time I pray that He kept me alive long enough for me to realize the truth. Yeah, and in in uh 2019, I laid in my bed on I remember the date, February 17th, and I asked Christ to be my savior, and uh after all that, uh and it was a a one of those moments that you just knew it was happening because I just felt overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit. I know not everyone gets that feeling, but I know I did. I jumped out of bed and went into my wife uh and told her, hey, I just gave my life to Christ. Uh and um it's been great ever since then. Uh I mean, yeah, you we have our our uh ups and downs, things like that. Right. But uh yeah, we're um it's been a great journey for me since then. It really has. You know, I got involved in the church right away, I got baptized right away, and uh I just started serving all I could and and just getting into the gospel, getting into the Bible, and it's really been an amazing experience. Yeah, so it's been going on for about seven years now, and I just wanted to keep going.
Chris GraingerMan, it sounded like God was trying to get your attention for a while.
Steven PennypackerHe he was, he was, and again, I look at it as he was teaching me by being patient, he was teaching me patience. So uh hopefully I'll learn from that, you know. Uh I'm serious because uh 50, you know, waiting till you're 57 or 58 years old, anything could happen between you know the time I was born until then, but it didn't, and I was able to uh was able to be saved. Yeah.
From Air Force To Vision Church
Chris GraingerSo now kind of go back a little bit further. So growing up, did you go? Did you were you in, you know, did you grow up in the church? Did your family not do that? So was all that stuff kind of foreign to you?
Steven PennypackerIt was a little bit foreign to me. Um I uh we we didn't go to church. Uh I'm not saying I never did, but uh the uh probably the closest I got was when you like in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, you would do things at the church, you know. That's right. Uh not like on a Tuesday night or something like that, so everybody could get together. Uh and it was a Lutheran church, and I didn't know anything about that. So uh no, there was no um nothing like that, but I grew up on a uh my parents had great morals, and they taught my brothers and I that. And I really feel like we were good people, okay. We just weren't godly people, you know, we did the right things, uh, or what we thought was right anyway, uh, didn't get into any trouble, and which was good because my dad was a district justice, so which you know that kind of kept us on the straight and narrow. Oh, yeah. So um, but uh you know, after I left home at 17 to join the Air Force, um I really didn't get involved with the church. And I should have, because I had an experience, I remember in basic training going to a church service on a uh a Saturday night, and it was uh it was very emotional. And you know, I've been away from home now for the first time for about two weeks, and just all these emotions were going through me, and just a lot of boo-hooing and everything. Um but again, I just never made the connection, you know.
Chris GraingerWell, God and his sovereignty, I mean he worked it out for you there. And it and it sounds like also you're plugged into Vision Church, which I'm super excited. But when this comes out, we'll be just finishing up the men's conference. But how did you get plugged in with Vision Church there, Steven?
Steven PennypackerWell, that was kind of uh uh it was just by luck, really. Uh, I had gone online looking for uh churches in this area, uh-huh, and I happened to come by Vision uh online, and they had their sermons out there. And uh so I listened to one of the sermons, it was not even given by our our lead pastor, who was Pastor Chris Pratt, and no, he's not the actor. Uh it was by an uh another uh pastor that was there, and he taught on Ephesians, and I just felt like okay, this is a place I want to visit. And um, my wife and I made an appointment to see Pastor Chris, meet with him. He showed us around the church, and we started going and never stopped. Uh it was just a great experience for us there, and we just watched the church grow so much. You know, we went there, it was like 40 or 50 people, and now we're up to two services and you know, doing 400 people, uh, sometimes more every week. So it's it's really a good experience. That's wonderful.
Chris GraingerYeah, I'm really excited to for the men's conference. It's gonna be a great time.
Steven PennypackerI think so. I really do. We're looking forward to it. Amen.
Finding Lion Within Us Brotherhood
Steven PennypackerWe are how how'd you how'd you find the lion, Stephen? Uh, that was through uh uh a friend of both of ours, Jason Hicks. Uh he had um talked about that. He would send out your uh uh your lion's roar email she would send out, right? And he he would post them in our men's ministry uh church center page. And uh I just I loved those. I really did. And I said, I got I gotta be a part of this, you know. I need to go in, check it out. And that's exactly how uh I got to know it. It was through Jason. That's really cool, man.
Chris GraingerYeah, and guys, you know, give you one more. I mean, you're evidence of that with the lion and with Jason, he's a big advocate for what we do. Yeah, he's a great guy, he is 100%, very God-fearing man. So he definitely is. I mean, you you've kind of jumped into Lion, and now it feels like you just going all in, you're all over the place. Every time you're a lot of meetings and posts and things like that. So, what's been your experience with it so far?
Steven PennypackerOh, I love it, I love it. Um, I was I guess one thing that surprised me, uh, and I it shouldn't have surprised me, but was the number the the amount of brokenness that these men have. You know, and it's it's heart-wrenching to read some of these things or to listen to them, and uh you just you just want to be there for them. Uh and but all you can do is just uh pray for them and uh pray for their families and just uh you know do what you can. But right it's I don't know, it's just that that part it's kind of bittersweet, but broke brokenness is everywhere. It is, yeah. So uh but I I I just enjoy fellowshipping with the guys, you know, and now part of the uh being part of a mastermind group. Um yeah uh that that's been really we've only met twice, but it's still really I know it's gonna be a great experience.
Chris GraingerOh yeah, 100%. And I mean the brokenness you're speaking of, it it still gets to me as you can as it as you as you you can recognize when the guys come in, they share some of the most intimate and raw things that are happening in their life, and then I get a chance to talk with so many guys throughout the week, and that the common denominator man is just like I don't have a place to share this. Like I'm I'm like, why aren't you plugged into a church? And and many of them are. Some of them aren't, but many of them are. And they can the constant feedback is like, yeah, I may be plugged into a church, but I still I just don't feel comfortable, you know, being that transparent, you know, right now in a church setting. So I just feel like we we found a a way where guys can literally just let the guards down. I think it comes because so many guys they're just transparent out the gate, you know, versus trying to put up this this facade. And and I think that's been, at least from my purview, has been helpful for a lot of guys just to be real.
Steven PennypackerYeah, I I totally agree. Uh, it's just amazing how they open up. And I mean, they'll be in the lion's den one day, and all of a sudden you're just hearing all these things, and it's uh yeah, it is great. Uh I I know even like when I joined discipleship groups, right? You have to you have to get to know the people a little bit before you're willing to you know open up those secrets. And but with the lion's den, I don't know, I don't know if it's because it feels like there's an it's not really an anonymity, but you're not right there, you know. You don't have you don't feel like you're being judged, I think. Oh yeah. Um that's part of it.
Chris GraingerI've told people too, I said, I think some of it is, you know, if it's if if it's in my local church, and I'm a I'm a member of a local body church, and then I'm not, you know, I don't forsake the gathering of the saints. I think there's there's we are definitely not trying to be a replacement for the church. What we're trying to rely on really is be a supplement for it. But I've found in those church settings, many of the settings that I've been with with in a local body, usually I'm with my wife. And if it's not with my wife, the men things are just kind of awkward, you know. Just just a little bit weird. And and I'm not sure if I want to bring up this issue with this, what that I'm dealing with, because I could very, very possibly run into you at the Mexican restaurant later on, you know, with my wife. And so I don't know that some of that creates, you know, the lion doesn't kind of create a little bit of separation from that because we got guys literally all over the world in the lion now. And I don't know. It's just interesting to see how God is using it and how guys are leaning into it and finding encouragement along the way.
Steven PennypackerYeah, it's definitely something that was needed. It was, and I I was just, you know, I I don't know what you know made you do this, but it just was a great calling. I know that.
Chris GraingerYeah. Well, it definitely is it. It's it's a lot of work, it's a lot of honor, it's a lot of uh just you know, pray guess-go. It's just trusting God's gonna show us the way, you know. And I guess, I mean, you've been in it for uh a little while now. What would you say is like the the most impactful part for you thus far with the lion?
Steven PennypackerUm I think it it would be the prayers themselves. Uh the prayer huddle. I try to get there as much as I can. Um just the men opening up like we discussed before. Um, I really like the fact that there's just so many different uh meetings and things you can go to. Uh there's Bible studies, there you have your uh health and you know, all these different things that you can get involved with, and you can pick which ones you really need help with. Now, uh because you know, there's just no way I can attend every of all of them, but there are some that maybe one day I will definitely need to get into that group. Right. You know, because some just because life happens, right? So I think that's what the most impactful thing is, just seeing what's available out there uh in one platform for these men to go through. Amen.
Chris GraingerI'm encouraged by it. I definitely want to see more and more, I pray that we see more and more marriages restored and healed. We've seen several already. But man, I just feel like I don't know about you, Steve, but I feel like every time I turn around, there's a prayer request for a marriage. Right. It's just over and over and over. And it's just I'll go to my wife every day. I'm like, I love you. She's just like why after you see the stuff that I see and hear the stories that I'm hearing on a regular basis, I just I just want you know much I love you. You know, like yeah, the things we feel like we're struggling with, we're not that bad right now. You know, it could be so much worse, and that's a blessing when you so I think that it also helps give perspective. And I've seen marriages really come a long way just from being the encouragement, and also to your point, the prayer that other guys are actively praying for each other in their marriages right now.
Steven PennypackerYes, yeah, most definitely.
Chris GraingerAmen, brother. Well, I mean, you know, you're you're out there, you're you're in North Carolina. I'm looking forward to the meaning of some of the events. You know, we got uh we did a I don't even know if you were a part of it, but we did an event for Vision Church probably two years ago. I'm not sure if you came to it or not.
Steven PennypackerI didn't. I was signed up to come to it, but something came up that day, and I can't remember what it was, and I missed it. Uh, but you know, they brought back the pictures and everything, and everyone just had a great time out there with that. They did.
Chris GraingerYou know, it was a lot of fun. I mean, your your pastor, I mean, he had a great time. We, of course, we had a lot of artillery there. Right. There may or may not be some photos. So I'll let that just you know, kind of kind of just sit where it sits, but it was a good time. He's a great guy. I mean, it's just I could tell just in that in that environment, they care about men's ministry, you know, and they're and they're trying to figure it out that and they're very open to they don't have all the answers, but they they're gonna take steps and and got God's guiding them. And I think that's why the the the church is, I mean, a healthy church, man. A couple of uh really two things crying babies and and worshiping men. I mean, if you get those two things, brother, your church is gonna be okay, you know. Right. Exactly. So it's really exciting to see, man.
Steven PennypackerIt is. And the men's ministry is uh is coming along. We meet every month now for a breakfast on Saturday mornings. We go through someone, different people, different men teach the lessons for that. Uh, we're getting ready to finish up uh Joey Martin's book here, uh Stand Firm, and um and then we'll go into the conference. And after that, I'm not sure where we're going, but we'll come up with something.
Chris GraingerI'm not gonna let the cat out the bag. I know where you guys are going next, so we'll but we'll okay. We'll let you guys figure out it'll be a fun one, I think. So looking forward to that. But but no, it's it's been great. And just having you in the line, thank you first and foremost for taking steps and joining in and and being a participant and helping sharpen
Why Joining Helps Men Heal
Chris Graingerother guys. And maybe there's somebody listening right now, Stephen, who they're on the fence. Maybe they they've listened to the podcast or they've read our Bible plan uh plans on the Bible app, things like that. All that stuff takes so much time, but they haven't taken a step with the lion. Um, what would be your simple encouragement to that guy right now?
Steven PennypackerUh just no matter what you're going through, there's something in the line for you. There is. That that would be my encouragement. Don't, you know, you don't have to worry about being judged at all because you know, we're all a wreck. We really are. We're a mess. And that's all there is to it. You know, we're sinners and we're a mess, but uh some people have been in the faith more and they can help out uh, you know, with some ideas for you, with scripture, uh just with uh if nothing else for prayer. But we you know, we can't do those things if we don't know what they are. So, you know, get involved. There are other men going through the same thing, and this is a great platform in which to uh to get involved with those things. Right. Amen of that, brother.
Chris GraingerMan. Well, I mean, it's been a blessing again having you in. Before we get to our final parts here, anything else you'd like to share today, Stephen?
Steven PennypackerNot that I can think of. I feel like I've covered everything that I wanted to uh to go through. Uh again, I just thank God every day that he was patient with me, waited for me, and just kept uh working at my heart.
Chris GraingerAnd uh, you know, I'm glad to be where I am right now. 100%, brother. 100%. Well, it's been an honor to have you with us. Hey, before we wrap up, though, I'm gonna run a couple things by
Dad Jokes And Book Pick
Chris Graingeryou. First of all, we have a book, we do a book of the week at the lion. I don't have it with me right now, couldn't find it earlier. I know I have it, I just misplaced it. But it's called Raising Spiritually Strong Kids. So for you guys, you know, Charles Fay wrote that one. Go get a copy of that book. And then I got two dad jokes for you, Stephen. I'd like to run by you. Okay. All right. Now these came from John Murray. You probably know John from the from in the lion's den, but right he got it. He he ran across a batch of uh dad jokes and he sent them to me. So I'm I'm mixing these in on these member spotlight episodes. Our dad joke, you know, connoisseur, if you will, is Doug. Doug's always a top dad joke guy, but but John's a good clothing. He's he's running neck and neck with Doug now with all the dad jokes he's submitting. So there's go ahead.
Steven PennypackerGo ahead. Go ahead. No, I was just gonna say, well, now you have a lot to choose from.
Chris GraingerSo that's right. That's right. Yeah. I don't know if there are any you know a lot of good ones to choose from, but well, but we have a lot to choose from. How about that? You know, so so the first one is why did a stadium get hot after a game? You know why a stadium will get hot after a game?
Steven PennypackerI do not.
Chris GraingerWell, all the fans left. Okay. Oh my god. I like that one. I like that one. I like that one. All right, now the second was what kind of car does a sheep drive? A sheep, like uh like out there in a farm animal, you know? Yeah, what kind of carrier? I don't I do not. It would be a lamb burghini. Oh, okay. Yeah, so which one do you like, though? The fan one or the lamb one? I think I like the fan one. I don't think I'm with you. I'm voting with you today this week. That's a good one. That's a good one. That's a good one. So, guys, you know, we put these as a poll every Friday at the Lion, and then you get to vote on it. And then the cool part about it is you get to like really rag the guys who vote wrong. I mean, totally. I mean, give them a hard time. I I haven't done that, but I think I've been on the losing end more than either. It's crazy. It's each week, like one of them just takes off and the other one always falls back. But anyway, I always usually when I can, I run them by Becca. I'm like, hey, what do you think about these two? And both of them should just be like, You got to find something else to do with this. I'm like, okay, so anyway.
Steven PennypackerYeah, I run them by my wife as well. I do.
Chris GraingerThere you go. There you go. So get that that that that direct you know feedback from the market we're trying to serve. You know what I'm saying? Exactly. Love it,
Discipling Your Family Beyond Sunday
Chris Graingerlove it. Well, our question of the week is how are you discipline disciplining your family beyond Sunday morning? I mean, uh Jesus, not discipline, discipling, that's a better word. I I couldn't read. So how are you discipling your family beyond Sunday morning? Fellas, I'm telling you, this is a big one for me. If you're outsourcing spiritual leadership to the church for your family, you have completely missed it. You've missed it. It's not their job to disciple your family. They're supposed to come alongside you and to help you for sure, but you are the number one, the number one uh prophet, priest, king. I mean, you you're it of your of your home. So do not advocate that responsibility. And if you need support, if you need help with that stuff, guys, don't it's no shame, man. Like raise your hand, let us know. We'd love to walk with you at the line and show you some way, some ways that we try to come alongside and encourage you, uplift you to be the leader that God intends you to be. So check it out. Uh, other than that, Steven, thank you, man, for your time today. Appreciate all everything, but anything else for today?
Steven PennypackerUh that's it. I appreciate uh you bringing me on.
Chris GraingerAmen, brother. Well, guys,
Events, Bible Plans, Next Steps
Chris Graingerthank you. If to get connected with Steven, go to thelionwithin.us, you'll see the daily SK, or you can jump into the Lions then. Steven's part of that. He's even in one of our leadership masterminds. Now that's not open to everybody. You can put an application in for it because we want to make sure that we're putting the right guys and trying to get them plugged into a group that's really gonna fit and serve them well. So the applications out there as well. Open up the Bible app. That's a great way to connect with us, fellas. We have tons and tons. I think, I think we've we've passed the 70 threshold for Bible plans, which is crazy, on the Bible app, and guys all over the world are downloading those and and finding encouragement. And then you heard Steven and I talk about the event at his church. Well, then when this comes out, I have an event coming up. I'm actually when the day this comes out, I'll be flying to Kansas for an event in Kansas. And then uh for the remainder of this year, we'll have an event in Ohio, Westchester, Ohio, and Crossfield, Tennessee. So we got lots of opportunities to connect with you guys. And then 2027, we got a lot of things in the works. So just be on the lookout, fellas. Go to the linewithin.us slash events to connect with us. And like Steven's church, the way it got started with Stevens Church is he and we talked about it. Jason got connected and we had conversations with his pastor. And then next thing you know, we're having a I'm just a guy men's conference. It's gonna be awesome. So, guys, we can do these types of things, and we'd love to walk along with you and serve you. You can connect with us at support at the lionwithin.us if you want to send an email there. I'd love to hear connect with you there. Other than that, have a great day. We'll see you next time and just keep unleashing the Lion Within.
Book Resource And Final Encouragement
Chris GraingerIf you're like me, you don't need another book just sitting around collecting dust. What I enjoy is something to help guide me when my feet hit the ground in the mornings.
