Christian men are in a battle for their lives. Satan will do everything possible to destroy them. The Lion Within Us is a community that provides encouragement to become the leaders God intends us to be. Our main focus lies within three categories: Health (Mental/Physical), Wealth (Careers/Finances) and Self (Husbands/Fathers/Brothers in Christ). By sharpening these areas of our lives, we can find the strength needed to stand firm in our faith and unleash the Lion Within.
The most dangerous words a man can say are “I’d never do that.” Temptation doesn’t usually kick down the front door, it slips in through small compromises we excuse, hide, or downplay. We open 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 and get honest about why spiritual overconfidence is a trap for Christian men who want strong marriages, clean integrity, and real spiritual leadership.

Welcome to The Line Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I'm your host, Chris Granger. Let's jump in. All right, guys, spiritual kickoff time. Let's get into it. Okay. So the scripture of the week this week is 1 Corinthians chapter 10, two verses though, verses 12 and 13. It says, Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. No temptation has overtaken you, but such that is common to man. And God is faithful. Who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you're able? But with the temptation will provide you the way of escape also. So you will be able to endure it. So, guys, we're going to take some time. We're going to see how we can unpack those two verses to our life so we can simplify and apply them as Christian men right here today. Okay?
Again, these spiritual kickoff episodes, if you enjoy them, guys, we do them Monday through Friday at The Line Within Us. It's called the Daily SKO Spiritual Kickoff. Get it. So go join that for free. It's our way to serve you, to encourage you, and also gives you access to our prayer request space. So if we'd like for us to be praying for you, we'd love to know how to pray for you. Just share the prayer requests. We'll lift them up on a regular basis. We even have a prayer meeting every Monday. I'm recording this on a Monday. So every Monday, we have a prayer meeting. We invite you to that. So open open Google Meet. This is for anybody in the world, literally across the world, from Australia. We got them all over the world, fellas, that joined this prayer meeting. We'd love for you to have you to be part of that, okay? So all that's there. And if you're in the continental U.S., I almost forgot about this, but if you're in the continental U.S., we got free gift we'd love to send you. So go to alignwithin.us, sign up for that daily spiritual kickoff today, okay?
All right. First of all, where is 1 Corinthians? All right, we need to understand. So this is New Testament, okay? I'm not going to assume anything here. It's you go past your gospels, Acts and Romans, then you get to 1 Corinthians. You got to 2 Corinthians, it's okay. You're close. Just back up a little bit, bud. So it's no big deal. All right. So now, this whole week, we're going to be talking about temptation, okay, and what does it mean to be tempted? And for this particular spiritual kickoff episode, I want you to think about the assumption we make sometimes as men that we're
immune. Okay? And this verse right here really, really shows us how none of us, not a single one of us, are immune to temptation. Because it'd be ludicrous to think. Let's just be real. Hey, no one wakes up and says, today's the day I'm going to ruin my life, right? I'm going to ruin my marriage or my finances or my health or whatever it is. No, no one would ever say that. But all too often, that's what happens when we entertain temptation. It just does, bro. And the apostle Paul wrote these words immediately after reminding the Corinthians about Israel's failures in the wilderness, in the wilderness, because they witnessed to God's miracles and experienced his provision, and yet many still drifted into idolatry, immorality, and disobedience. So Paul's point was pretty sobering right here. If you people, you experience God's power firsthand, if y'all could fall, then none of us should assume we're beyond temptation. And don't get me wrong, spiritual confidence is good. But check this out. Spiritual overconfidence is dangerous. And it's a thin stinking line, bud. A thin line. Because I'm reminded when I started thinking about this verse, and when I wrote this original plan for the Bible habit, I really started thinking about a good buddy of mine who's gone through a lot of stuff
recently. I mean, it just goes to show what happens when you don't live life your way. And I watch him go down the destructive path that ultimately ended his marriage. And this was years ago. This is a whole this is a lifetime ago, but I met him and his wife shortly after their son was born. And uh man, they seemed to be like the perfect couple, bud. I mean, they they were in love, they were they were kind of just you know new parents, but still very much flirted with each other and goofed around with each other, and uh they were newlyweds to some degree with a couple years being newly you know being married, and they had this new son, and and I spent I spent a lot of time with them, a lot of time with them, okay, and I'm doing doing stuff with them, you know, hunting and and fishing and just working on stuff, you know, late nights throughout the week. And and but I noticed something started to shift in it, and it and it didn't really take me long to uh to start putting some of the pieces together. And he was he was very guarded, and he was very guarded with the cell phone, uh, particularly when it was uh his wife was away. And uh that that kind of caused me, it was one I remember it was one evening, just two of us, and I was like, bro, what's going on? What are we doing? Like you're like you're real shifty. Like, what's up? And he takes and he admitted to me that he'd been texting with another woman. And I was like, Oh, really? Yeah, but we're just friends, we work together, we're just friends. And I was like, Oh, are you worried about your wife finding out about this? And and he was just, I remember he's like, Man, man, we're gonna always be fine. We'll always be fine, bro. And at that time, I'll be honest, I wasn't walking with Christ the way I am now. And and uh I hadn't been discipled and uh we're to really to the point of what it meant to be to honor the sacred covenant of marriage. I mean, I knew people cheated on people, it just happens, but I knew my parents didn't, but I just just these things happen, and it again, he said it and it was just texting. And I mean, full disclosure, if that conversation were to happen today, it'd be a whole lot different. It would be a whole lot different. It'd be a whole lot more truth between the eyes. And I don't know if we would remain friends, just to be honest. I mean, you gotta ask boys in your life like that. You gotta have some boys in your life who are willing to call you out on your crap when you're walking in it, okay? And I didn't do it. I hate to say it back then, I stayed silent. And what I watched unfold was the slow, painful demise of a marriage that I couldn't save. Because here's how it works, boys. A text leads to a call, a call leads to a meal, a meal leads to destruction. This is what happened. His marriage collapsed. He was running around on her, hooking up with his chick. And it's just it's like, what are you doing? Because when you look behind, what was left was a devastated wife, a young son, now growing up in a broken home. All because he assumed he was immune when he wasn't. And it's not like this story is like this just uh one off off the shelf. No, this is common. This is common. We often only see the wreckage, but if you peel back the layers, the root nearly always traces back to temptation. And that's temptation that we entertain instead of escaping from, right? And running from it. And look what Paul tells us right here in 1 Corinthians. He's like, look, take heed lest you fall, okay? Take heed. My buddy needed someone to speak truth and life into him to warning, to warn him rather, about the danger ahead. And he didn't get that, unfortunately. What he got was me being passive. And I don't know if my words would have saved his marriage, but I'll tell you one thing, my silence certainly didn't stand didn't help it stand, did it? It didn't. And if you look at his case, it was lust, lust, that took the wheel. Because lust lures us down a path that looks exciting because it's paved with self-confidence and and attractiveness and intrigue. I'm gonna tell you what, buddy. You may be hearing this story and thinking, well, maybe I'm on a similar path or try. And maybe you have convinced yourself that you ain't like my buddy and that you can handle it. I'm gonna tell you what, bro. Repent and seek his will. Period. Because when you look at scripture like this, we see right here that that God doesn't leave us to fencless. Because Paul tells us that no temptation we face is unique. So others have fought the same battle, but more important than that, God is faithful. Because it tells us also he will provide a way of escape. And the problem is not that God provides one, fails to provide one, rather. The problem is we often don't take it. That's the problem.
And I'm gonna give you a couple examples of what escape looks like. Maybe escape looks like deleting that chick's number out of your phone that you know you shouldn't have to start with. Like, delete it, Bo. Are you man enough to do that? Or confessing the struggle to a fellow to a brother in Christ. Maybe the um the answer is simply leaving the room. Don't put yourself in a room with that temptation. Or cut off the conversation. When you know that this conversation has headed too far, and you've taken that turn past you know, play to where now you're heading, the next the next message is gonna head down a path that you it looks tempting. Oh no, those moments, Bo, end it. End it before you make a decision you regret. Because the way out is rarely convenient. I'm gonna tell you what, straight up, it's always available. It's always available. And here's the reality: none of us, none of us can resist or can control rather the temptations that come our way. But God provides a way out. I mean, I'm recording this, getting ready to go to the beach with the family. I know temptation is gonna be down there. It's gonna be lots of temptation looking, you know, prancing around on the beach. But I know there's a way out. And if we think that we're immune, that's a that's a step that leads us to destruction. Guys, we've got to be humble. We've got to be diligent, and we have to be obedient to take these steps towards freedom. Because again, no one wakes up and says the days of damn will ruin my life. It'd be ridiculous to say that. But those of us that that are really trying to build something for the kingdom, like God honoring marriages and God honoring career, God honoring children, things like that. They happen and survive when we take temptation seriously. And where we refuse to flirt with compromise. We're just not gonna do it. And those are trying to think I don't want to say this, guys. The men who remain faithful are those who understand our weaknesses. Like, I need to understand the weaknesses for Chris, and then cling tightly to God's strength. Because my weakness is not gonna be your weakness, right? We all have these different ones. So, whatever the Holy Spirit is convicting you to surrender today, like don't ignore it, man. Repent. Take take the step. God is providing you the offering. You gotta be you gotta walk through it though. Because the act of surrender may seem small at the moment, but it could alter the course of your life. It could save your family, it can preserve your testimony. Your testimony matters, and brings glory to the one who is faithful to provide a way out of us. So I really want to just I pray that you think about the question of the week this week is what compromise have you been excusing instead of confronting? We we we can't be men of excuse, we've got to hit it head on and not relent and trust our Heavenly Father.
And fellas, that means also taking the guidance and instruction that comes directly from the Holy Spirit, and you only get that when you have a relationship with the Holy Spirit, period. You don't get that without Him. So when it talks about God is faithful, He's not going to allow you to be tempted beyond which you're able to be tempted, He's gonna provide escape out that is only available when you have that relationship with Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Because then you have the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit that's guiding and directing your decisions. But without that, you're just flying blind, bro. And you're flying with your own wisdom and discernment. And at some point, every single one of us, we we hit the end of our capabilities, period. Particularly when it comes to honeys and money, baby. That's just the way it is. We're gonna make bad decisions. That temptation, he wants to dangle that lure out there in front of us over and over and over. So we gotta have the power of the Holy Spirit to be able to recognize the temptations for what they are and then turn to him, to God, to be able to resist the path out that he talks about and to endure it the way he talks about in scripture. But that surrendering to him first is such an important step. And if we skip that, or try to omit that, or try to, again, push through on our own, we're gonna fall short. We just are. So my prayer is that if you're listening to the Lion with Dennis, you may have just brought through the podcast, maybe for some reason this verse popped up and you just want to learn more about it. And we get talking about temptation, you're a little bit curious. I'm telling you, if you don't have the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit working within you right now, you're flying blind. You're in a fight right now, that you're getting sucker punched, and you only know you're in a fight. The evil one's just gonna keep having a field day with you. And there is an escape path, there is a way out, but it starts with surrendering your life to Jesus as Lord and Savior. And that's my prayer for you. My prayer is that you take this seriously, that you recognize that you cannot do this without Him. And that you turn your life over to Him right now.
And if that's you, and you you recognize the sin you have in your life, and and you truly believe Jesus is who He says he is, and you're ready to confess Him as Lord and Savior of your life, let's just pray together and invite Him in. So, Father, I don't even know who in the world right now where this message of temptation is resonating. I know it's somebody, and I know we do this for you, Lord, to honor and glorify you, Father. And for that one listener who's at the end of their rope, they don't know which way to turn. We're pointing them to you, God. I pray that you hear their prayer. I know you do, and I pray you give them the peace that passes all understanding as they surrender their life to you. And they confess you as Lord, not just Lord over today, but Lord over every day, every day of their life, as they are starting their discipleship journey right now. We're so excited for them. We're praying for them, we're praying strength for them, God. We love you, we praise you, God. We pray it all according to your precious will in Jesus' name. Amen. Look, here's the deal.
