The Lion Within Us - Leadership for Christian Men
Christian men are in a battle for their lives. Satan will do everything possible to destroy them. The Lion Within Us is a community that provides encouragement to become the leaders God intends us to be. Our main focus lies within three categories: Health (Mental/Physical), Wealth (Careers/Finances) and Self (Husbands/Fathers/Brothers in Christ). By sharpening these areas of our lives, we can find the strength needed to stand firm in our faith and unleash the Lion Within.

Welcome And Scripture Of The Week
Chris GraingerWelcome to the Line Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders, God intends you to be. I'm your host, Chris Granger. Let's jump in. All right, guys. Fun Friday. Member spotlight. These are getting to be fun, fun, fun. So let's get into it. Before we get to our member scripture the week this week is Genesis 3.12. It says the man said, The woman you gave me to be with me, she gave for me to from the tree, and I ate it. So again, we have great ways right at the very beginning of the Bible of men deflecting. So this is what we do. We do a very good job of deflecting. But uh seriously, guys, I unpacked that verse at length in the spiritual kickoff episode. So go back in your podcast feed, check that out, and hopefully you'll enjoy that. And again, Monday through Friday, try to simplify and apply God's word. We call it the daily spiritual kickoff. It's free. It also gives you access to our prayer request space, which you know I can report to you right now. That is the most active space that we have in the Lion within us community. And praise the Lord. I mean, I want it to be. I'd uh I'd I'd much rather that be the more active than anything we do in the husband group and the Lion's Den community or even SKO space. Because that is where the spirit's moving the most. So look, if you need to be uh prayer, if you have prayer requests, or if you want to just come alongside some prayer warriors and pray about some meaningful things that are actually getting shared, not just a bunch of unspokens, like come on over to the Deadly Spiritual Kickoff and you can find that at the lionwithin.us. All right, guys. So look, my guest today, you got to go in go in your way back machine on the Lion With Dennis. If you go back way back to episode 24, you'll recognize him, okay? Now back then that's he was one of our primary guests. He was helping me get started. Uh, he's a dear friend of mine as well, but uh it's so excited to have him back. So, Mr. Andrew Sailor, what's up, brother? How you doing today?
Andrew SatherIt's good to good to be back with you. Weird to be in front of the microphones, but uh at least we've done it once before, so maybe uh we can do it again without tripping too much.
Chris GraingerHey man, we haven't lost a patient yet, you know what I'm saying? So it's uh it's it's good, bro. I mean, but it's like seriously, February 23rd, 2022 is when your episode came out. Like it it seems like it's to me, it seems even longer ago because we've known each other for so long.
Andrew SatherIt it does. I I I can visualize, I can see myself recording that. Like I remember the space I was in. And it's it's a weird time. It's weird that we have this technology. Uh I joined the Lion, and one of the first things I did, I don't know if it was one of the first things, but it was definitely early on in my journey as being part of the Lion was I did the Saturday morning Bible studies with Rushing and Lucas.
Chris GraingerYeah, yeah, yeah.
Andrew SatherAnd that was that was wild because it was like like I've been prayed over at church and things like that, you know, and it's been very powerful. Um I didn't know like prayer over a Zoom call could be so impactful. And uh just being part of those Saturday Bible studies and being able to share about life and and and share about the little things too, you know. Like I I was running my first marathon at the time, and I like I felt the guys praying for me like when I needed it the most when I was training for that marathon. So I was like, it's it's it's cool that you know we have these this technology. I'm I'm sitting in an office and we're virtually talking to each other. We've got microphones and cameras in our faces, but like that's God still moves even through the the the the technology and and everything. And things have changed so much lately, just with the world, but I'm encouraged, like you said, like you're you've got the prayer request board, which has been so active, more active than I ever remember seeing it in the lion. And so something's definitely happening, and it's it's cool to be a part of. It is cool, man.
Retreats, Sabbath, And Real-World Fellowship
Chris GraingerI mean, and and and like God gets all the glory because I am nowhere near smart enough to figure this stuff out. So I mean it let's just go ahead and lay that out, right? But the cool thing too is like we started a weekly, I don't even know if you know, so we started a weekly uh we call it a prayer warrior huddle. And it's for anybody. Like any if you're in a daily SKO, if it doesn't matter. It's from the free plans to the guys who are in the you know the full community. And man, that's been cool just to see guys to your point. Like we literally had a dude on there, it was this week, he was in a Toyota plant, hard hat, vest, like he's at work. You know, we got guys who are we're out and about, you know, we got one guy who's on a tugboat. I mean, we got guys all over, you know, in these in these settings, but they pop all and and through you know, technology, like legit, we're praying over each other. And I don't know. I just think there's some something powerful about that.
Andrew SatherIt is like um I worry sometimes about remote work. I don't know how many how much of the audience like works from home, but there is something isolating and you know, I grass is always greener on the other side, right? So people look at me and be like, I wish I could work from home like you do, Andrew. But like I miss I miss the the water cooler talk, you know, I miss um getting coffee and or getting lunch and things like that. Uh I remember you and you, me, and Sheets having lunch at his house one time, and I was like, I'm at a strange peace right now. Like we're just like three dudes having lunch, and I was like, that was when uh, you know, that was before this journey with the lion. Yeah. And uh I would definitely say you guys were way more in the word than I was at the time. I was like, there's something, there's something different here, there's something special.
Chris GraingerYeah.
Andrew SatherAnd that was cool, it was cool to be a part of that. But like those are the types of things like you you only get in person.
Chris GraingerRight.
Andrew SatherUm the uh what do you call the your outdoor retreats?
Chris GraingerYeah, reclaiming the wild. Yep.
Andrew SatherThe reclaiming the wild, yeah. Uh I went to one where everything was based off Sabbath and like you gave a book and everything.
Chris GraingerYep.
Andrew SatherAnd like I went into that, like, okay, like I grew up in the church, right? So I feel like I feel like I I should have known a lot of these things, but uh I had a rebellious heart and um not proud of it, but finally came back around. And um like I didn't realize that honoring the Sabbath, not I didn't realize I was like one of the Ten Commandments, and it took like that retreat to to figure that out. And I'm like, wow, but but having like that space where we could all hang out and like really dive deep into the book that that you gave us, and like it just gave me this reset of we have this with this daily life, this nine to five, this this constant grind, technology's always beeping at us. But like these these reclaiming the wilds are a great time to reset. And that and those are the types of things I feel like you can only get in person that you can't get with technology. So I don't know. It's it's cool the things you're doing and and the way you're bringing guys together.
Chris GraingerMan, we're trying, bro. Thank you for that. I mean, and when this comes out, the reclaiming the wild will be almost a month away. So I mean, you know, and we and we've learned a lot, you know, on those events, and we're still not perfect at them by any means, right? We're still learning that stuff, but it's uh I think just the intentionality coming together and you know, just having there's a lot of fellowship, a lot of fun, but then we're having a lot of good discipleship conversations as well.
Andrew SatherYeah, for sure.
Chris GraingerWell, I know you had some, you know, love for you to share. The guys can go back and listen to your episode, but also just you know where you're at right now. You also had some scripture you wanted to share today. So I'm just kind of give you a little space right here, brother.
Andrew SatherNo, yeah, I appreciate it. Um there's just something on my heart I want to I want to share and hopefully help somebody out there. Um one of the things I think that's great about the prayer requests, you we got a lot of new guys coming in, but there's also like a lot of pain and struggle. And I I know your deep your devos really hit to a lot of the pain and guys who are kind of in crisis mode, you know?
Chris GraingerYeah, yeah.
Entrusting Your Spirit: Luke 23
Andrew SatherAnd um, and there's never like a good perfect solution, like, oh, here's five steps, and you just get out of your crisis, right? Um that said, like um, I had something, so I just want to jump into like Luke 23, if you don't mind. This is Jesus during the crucifixion. And what I what I love personally about like the gospels is you get like different details from different guys uh who all witness the same thing. So the one in Luke in particular, um this is like the darkest hour, basically, but in verse 44, um, it was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured and the veil of the temple was torn into. And Jesus crying out with a loud voice said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. Having said this, he breathed his last. So I found that kind of interesting if you think about Jesus and literally his darkest hour, and what did he do? He quoted a psalm, which I thought was really cool. Like he quoted a psalm and talked about really like the ultimate sacrifice he made. So one of the um one of the cool apps I have from one of the guys, one of my good friends from The Lion, he recommended this app to me called um Blue Le Blue, what's it called?
Chris GraingerBlue Letter Bible.
Andrew SatherBlue Leather Bible, yeah.
Chris GraingerThank you.
Andrew SatherYou you've you've used that app before?
Chris GraingerI haven't used it, but I'm very I'm familiar with it, yes.
Andrew SatherOkay. So like it's cool because it um gives you kind of the Greek uh the Greek origin, and then there's different words that okay, if if the Greek root word was here and then it's also over here and it's also over there. Uh-huh. And I I love playing like different puzzles with my mind and things like that and diving deep. But um I was I was trying to figure out like, okay, so when Jesus said I commit my spirit, that that Greek, one of the ways you can translate it, I guess, is like I I deposit or I entrust, right? I I I deposit my spirit. And I th I think that's so interesting. Um, because also I have like the finance background, right? Like I've been working in finance for a while, and in today, and like in America, the idea of a deposit is kind of not like like we don't see it the way the world has always really seen deposits. Because like the government will just bail us out, right, if things get bad. But like for a long time, when you gave a bank or a merchant a deposit, what that really meant is you're giving up control of your dollar or your coin or whatever it is, and you're entrusting that that institution or that person is going to guard and take care of that dollar so that when you need it, you you you get it back. Like in the ancient times, you don't want to be carrying around a bunch of coins, right? Because somebody could come up and rob you, or you know, they could burn down in your house or something. So you would make a deposit, and then you're entrusting that, and then that person hopefully will give that money back to you when you need it. So I thought it was interesting that. How did Jesus deal with like the toughest situation? You could you could argue that was the toughest situation any human being has had to deal with. And he gave up control of his spirit. He said, Here you go, Father God, take my spirit. And I and I wonder if there can be some peace in that where if you're a guy out there who's really struggling, can you figure out a way to give up your spirit to God? Because God is God loves us, we can trust in God. We can trust that He will restore us. He's uh He tri triumphed over death. But it's hard for us to give to give up the things we hold on to. But if Jesus did it, maybe we can do it too.
Chris GraingerThere's definitely hope there, right? I mean, I love that the idea of the deposit and trust. Yeah, we don't even think about it to your point, making a deposit now. You don't think about you you just know it's gonna be there, but uh this is a different level, this is a deeper level of trust that gets tied here. And man, I get so many guys, Andrew now, that hit me up on pretty much a daily basis at this point, and whatever they're struggling with. And literally, yesterday I had a guy hit me, it's like, man, I I'm struggling with anxiety and I can't figure out how to give up control. And that was that was his email. That was his message to me. Wow. And I'm like, surrender, man. It starts with surrender, and you know, to your point right here, commit. And you know, my Bible says commit. Your hands I commit by spirit, and but that's that's hard to do for guys, man. And he he hit me back. He's like, Well, how do I do that? That's a great follow-up, you know, and the and the how too is the hard part, right? I mean, that's you mean we gotta put our trust in something greater than us, and man, that's hard for guys, for sure.
Anxiety, Control, And Surrender
Andrew SatherYeah, that's interesting. I was um I was going through some trouble pretty recently, and uh one of the things I repeated to somebody I'm really close with and love dearly is like I give up, I give up, I give up, like done trying so hard, you know? Like I just I I give up I give up striving. And uh one of the one of the psalms that comforted me during this time was uh it said thus cease cease striving, I am the Lord. So like we sometimes I don't know, like for me, sometimes I'm an overachiever, like I always want to be in control of things, and like like I I take steps and I take action and that helps me feel in control, and then it's like this the self-reinforcing loop of positivity, you know, I take action, I make progress, I feel good, I take more action, I make more progress, I feel good, and it continues, and that works for a while and until it doesn't. And then if if something comes up that's irrational or illogical or just something you weren't planning for, that whole framework completely breaks down. And so I feel like what what you're the the guy you're talking to, uh he sounds like he's like right right on the money, like right he knows what he has to do, but to your point, it's it there there's not always an easy solution for everybody of how how do you actually do that, right?
Targeted Scripture For Specific Battles
Chris GraingerTo some degree, yeah, and then to some degree I've I've started shifting my advice to guys on this, and it's almost like I'm just I see the like literally I didn't I didn't know what scripture you're gonna pull up, so I I didn't have a lot of time to think about this. But when I look at this verse in Luke and Luke uh 23, and when Jesus starts talking, to your point, he's he's he's um reciting a psalm, right? That tells me, and just think about when as soon as he you know goes into the wilderness at the very beginning of his ministry, the evil one comes up and all he hit him three times, and how did Jesus respond in those three times? It is written, it is written, it is written, right? So I think the answer is we better get better at our the it is written in our heart and and have those scriptures, and I think here's where where we miss it, bro. Like we feel like we need to memorize John 3.16 or Romans 5.8, right? And these are great verses, don't get me wrong. Romans 3.23, the Romans wrote, while those verses are important, if a man's going through sexual immorality, or if a man's going through uh issues of anxiety, there are verses in scripture that speak directly to that. Cast all your cares upon him. I mean, there's there's so many different verses that you could go to. So my my counsel now is like, all right, what are you going through? Okay, anxiety or control, boom. Here's a block, here's three verses. You need to memorize these. And when that when that hits, start speaking that. Speaking that into that moment, you know, because a verse about being, you know, husband, you know, love your wife ain't gonna do you no good in that moment. What anxiety said, right? I mean, it's just it's just it's trying to be like, how do we use God's word precisely to attack the evil one who's coming at us? He's gonna hit us. So let's use the right tool for the right job, right? And so I don't know, man. I don't know if that's helpful, but that's just what I'm trying to do more of is like lit listening and very intently listening to what guys are telling me. And then, okay, now redirect based off of the scripture. Here's how I would combat that. What do you think about that? You know, and then try and then and then the next challenge is all right, now you memorize it. Like you gotta memorize this stuff, man. You know, so I don't know if that's helpful, but that just comes to mind.
Andrew SatherYeah, um, I love you did a daily SKO this morning, and you mentioned um focus more on he and not on me, right? Uh that was that was such a profound focus on he, like focus on the Lord, focus on God. Um I I read a book recently, it's called Consider the Lilies. And um he he was talking about anxiety and and some other things too, but he said like when you focus on the character of God, somehow that that helps your anxiety because you realize he's in control. Um, which is not something you want to hear when you're going through in a moment, yeah. Big struggle. Big struggle, yeah. Yeah, it's I don't know, it's so it's so hard. Um you mentioned the Psalms. I didn't know if I wanted to share this, but uh I guess I will, because it's kind of kind of relevant. But uh I have this jar that someone gave me and uh has little verses and I'll I'll pull one out and uh they're definitely color-coded, and like you can do it based like on what emotion you're feeling. Sometimes I'll pull it out. I don't like what I pull out, so I'll Uno card draw another. Right, right, right.
Chris GraingerDraw four, baby.
Andrew SatherThat's right. But I drew I drew one out and I was not feeling good. I was not feeling good about like my understanding of God, why I was going through what I'm going through, struggling just to even like do the most basic things, right? And it's Psalms 56, 8. This is uh NLT 8, says, You keep track of all my sorrows, you have collected all your tears, you have collected all my tears in your bottle, you have recorded each one in your book. Like how amazing is that to have a God who knows you so well that he's collected all of your tears in his bottle. That means that means he knows exactly what you're going through right now. And like nobody else will understand what you're going through. But he does, and he's he's keeping track of it, which can be which can be encouraging because you know, because he is a god of restoration. Right. Not only did Jesus we talked about Jesus' darkest hour, not only did he go through that, but he also rose from the dead. He won. Right. And so it's super hard to have the faith that you're gonna get out of whatever predicament you're in. Yeah. But we just have to like that's our only choice. We just have to trust. Like, what else can you do? We do.
Chris GraingerThat's right. And I want to put my trust in the one that overcame death. That's it. Yeah. That's I'm gonna follow, you know, all the way.
Andrew SatherYeah. And I, you know, and uh I think I think going to like a place like the lion and putting your prayer request out there, like that's a huge step of faith in and of itself, to put yourself out there and be like, look, this is what I'm going through. And every time some guy does it, like a bunch of guys are rallying around him and and saying, like, praying for you, you know, or hey, maybe I've gone through this, or hey, you can do it, right?
Chris GraingerOr scripture reference. Yeah.
God’s Nearness In Our Tears
Andrew SatherOr scripture reference, yeah. But like there's such a deeper level to that too. Um when I when I was going through this, like not only was I able to lead on lean on the Lord and and lean on the Psalms and lean on on the Bible. but also like people close to me, especially like believers, you know. Being able to to call up somebody like you or somebody like Steven, right? Who like can give me some godly wisdom in a in a rough patch. Like that's so huge. If you have like something you can take from every person you talk to and then all of a sudden you're not alone.
Chris Grainger100%. I mean that's the whole that what that's what God gave me when we started the whole community idea and trying to figure it out. I I didn't know where he was going to take it and I still don't know where he's taking it. I just know he's doing something but it's also it's really interesting to see how open and transparent guys get pretty quickly and how so many of them are craving a place and and and again I'm not a church basher. I mean I I serve in a church I'm a deacon at a church so I I get that the church has its place. It can just be hard for guys to be real and to open up and to you know have a safe space and also if you got your bride there or your girl there or your kids there sometimes it's not easy to bring up the stuff that we're struggling with because we feel you know we're carrying the brunt of that you know so I don't know I think between that and the masterminds it's like that's the places where we're trying to get where these guys can have these meaningful conversations that they just can't find anywhere, you know? Yeah.
Andrew SatherYeah the masterminds are are cool too. Well I was meditating on the this verse in Luke and the before we got on today and then I'm like well what do I need to give up today? Like what do I need to give up? And I was like well there's that spiritual assessment that I'm like would rather claw my skin out than take you know and I ended up finally taking it before we got on this call. But man that was a that was like a mirror to my face.
Chris GraingerYeah.
Andrew SatherLike I have these things under the surface that in my mind they're all fine. But then I have to take a self-assessment and then I look at oh I scored this a two or oh I scored this a four.
Chris GraingerYep.
Andrew SatherLike maybe that's a signal that um it's not all fine when I thought it was I think guys need a dashboard man.
Masterminds, Assessment, And Honest Mirrors
Chris GraingerI mean God gives us dashboards as with emotions and things like that. But the world we live in these days and you're in it too with the finance, it moves so fast. And and I mean the I the more birthdays you have the faster they seem to come around. And it's just the way it happens man and and like there's there's this you know busyness that we all have. So the reason you know for the for that part of the mastermind is like man let's purposely slow down and just do an audit and just do a check and let's just see if the dashboard's saying that I got a flat tire or you know I need to I need to go into the shop for something. So I and I don't know I'm that was my my hope behind designing that component of it and I think hopefully you know as guys do it on a regular basis it's gonna be that that checkpoint to okay what what am I missing right now because we can be going so fast and it's just things just fly by us you know yeah and what what I love about the mastermind too is um well what I love and what I hate is that you're stuck you're stuck on a hot seat for like an hour. Right.
Andrew SatherSo it's like the the the plus size you got four or five other strong Christian men who can give you feedback, guidance, wisdom, all of that and at such a deeper level like where else in your life even if I were to call you after this call right like maybe we'd have 10, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, but then it's like man I got to get to my family or I got to get back to my work right a full hour to really dive deep into like how can I how can I really seek God's will in this decision.
Chris GraingerRight.
Andrew SatherOr how can I really like strategically point myself with the type of steps to get me somewhere it's it's a little bit terrifying and it's a little bit like man I'm a little embarrassed after I sat in the hot seat sometimes. But again it's like that opportunity that I don't know if you can get that anywhere else and it's it's really cool. It definitely helped me during probably one of the toughest decisions I've made in the in a long time.
Chris GraingerYeah. See I mean that's like that's what it's all about you know and to your point man I look at my calendar and I color code stuff sometimes on my calendar but bro it looks like a bag of Skittles blew up you know and it's just like there's just like one thing to the next and I feel guilty at times because like guys will want to get into something deeper with me and and next thing you know we've stacked things up on top of each other but to your point man it's hard to get someone's you know undivided attention for that amount of time and the topics that matter and I don't know I just feel like that's somehow again God gets the glory that's what's happening and uh you know I think that's that's helping guys grow.
Andrew SatherSo that's just it's super encouraging that's for sure yeah but like you have you have to put yourself out there. That's the hard part like all these all these things I I remember the the Saturday morning Bible studies uh I was such a punk and I think I never broke out of this but like I didn't even like have my camera on because I was like okay I'm literally rolling out the bed with like my coffee haven't brushed my teeth like my hair's a mess like I'm literally like camera off the entire time right right but like whatever those are all excuses right like oh I haven't brushed my teeth or I don't want to wake up early or whatever it is. They're just excuses. Like you do have to make an effort if you want help. I don't like there are times where you'll get rescued in certain things but like a lot of times you just have to get uncomfortable to to to find better things down the line. I don't know.
Chris GraingerI mean kind of go back full circle to your loop luke 23 you got to make deposits as a guy into other guys and I mean and if and the Bible study and the mastermind and things like for me that's making those deposits you know every conversation that we you and I've had and just because we we care about each other but then recognize at some point you know the evil's going to hit and you're gonna need to make a withdrawal and that's gonna come from other brothers and that have been walking with you man. But if you ain't had nobody you've been deposited in and it hits you going to make a withdrawal there ain't nothing in that account and that sucks you know I mean when I had my ankle happen back in what July and I put that little I just put a post on the in on the line guys like hey bro hey guys I I'm in the hospital right now this kind of sucks I could use like they rallied around and I and the and the the uh surgeon she told me a few weeks ago when she released me she's like I still cannot figure out your case I'm like why is that she's like it makes no sense the timeline like how fast for the severe severity of your injury how fast it was that you're I ran the day after Christmas five months to the day five months to the day and she told me when I the first time I met with her she said you're never gonna run again she's like get this out your mind she's like this it's this bad because she had to she had to put so much hardware on we talk about three three plates and 20 screws she's like get used to the idea of cycling I need you to learn the word cycle I'm like I need you to learn the word God like this is what this is where we're we're we're fundamentally different here on this and bro and then but then God just moved and then even through the second time when I had to get the surgery to take stuff out like the lion guys are just rattling around and and those moments I'm withdrawing a lot I I ain't making as many deposits. I'm doing a lot of withdrawals so I don't know man I just feel like it's so important to have those guys in our life that we can have these conversations and uh you know and and truly care about because something's gonna hit one day and we're gonna need them, you know?
Andrew SatherYeah.
Chris Grainger100% yeah well I mean bro if you if you were to have a uh think about just the impact of the lion for you in general how how could you summarize it? I'm just curious what has it meant so far as your walk with Christ how how has it helped you at all?
Deposits, Withdrawals, And Brotherhood
Andrew SatherNot just the mastermind but just the lion I'm just just I'm super curious on what you you know what the uh what that would be looks like for you yeah I was I was blessed and this is just my experience right my experience personally but I was blessed that um like it came and and grabbed me like you came and and reached out to me because it was it was still small and you were just getting started um and it's been that support system that I didn't realize I had until I needed it. And I continue to need it by the way uh but yeah it's been like a support system that if you would have asked me before the line do you need the lion I'm like nah right I'm good I'm I'm good there you know but then life happens and uh it's just continued to be a a support system and a blessing to me. So thank you.
Chris Grainger100% bro well I mean and Andrew I'm sure there's guys listening there's guys listening also that have listened to episode 24 and they still haven't joined the lion like I know it man they're just you know how it is uh so so like that guy who's listening he's consuming and we're hopefully helping him in his walk in in some ways with the between the podcast and the the Bible plans on the Bible app which you know guy's doing some great stuff there is there a word you like to share with that guy to consider just taking one even if it's just a free step of joining the daily SKO just getting connected with us that way could be maybe wants to put in an assessment a a mastermind assessment or maybe they do want to jump to community. I don't know but for that guy who hasn't taken a step man what would be your message to him yeah I don't have a word but how about like an idea um you can be very wide and shallow or you can be deep and narrow and so I'm speaking specifically to like because I I do it too like I consume a lot of Christian related content on YouTube and and stuff like that. Right.
Andrew SatherAnd it's so easy to find imperfections in the content that can keep you from like I feel like just the the internet and people and the world needs to get back to like um I know it's like a secular reference but like I got a guy for that kind of thing. Yeah like just stick stick with like a a couple a couple teachers of the word or or stick to a community rather than just being on the surface of a bunch. Like just try going deeper in one and you might find that that's more fulfilling than hopping around and staying on the surface everywhere you go.
