Chris Grainger:All right, for this episode, fellas, no introductions needed. Pastor Joby Martin super pumped to have him back. This is the fourth time Pastor Joby has been on the show, by far my favorite guest. I just, I love any chance I can get to talk and just just be encouraged by him. He has a new book Stand, firm and Act Like Men. It's out. So that's what got us connected to chatting, but so much that we dive into here in this conversation Again.
Chris Grainger:What he's doing at the Church of 1122 in Jacksonville, florida, is just absolutely incredible. They're growing. They're a movement for all people to discover a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. They're on fire. And so, guys, when this episode comes out, if you're interested, the next week Pastor Joby has a men's conference. You can go to mensconferencecom and at this point everything is sold out but he has virtual tickets so you can pop on. You can see some of these speakers. It's going to be a dynamic event. Fellas, we're going to be there to lie within us. We'll have the table out front. So we're super pumped to be just to be a part of what Pastor.
Chris Grainger:Joby has going there at 1122. So if you're in Jacksonville, florida, for that weekend, uh, come check us out and give us, give us a, uh, uh, just reach out to us. We'd love to say hi, we'd love to connect with you, we'd love just to uh pray with you, just to be an encouragement to you. So come see us there at the men's conference. But anyway, I know you're going to enjoy this conversation with Pastor Jobe, so just sit back and have some fun with my favorite Pastor Jobe, martin. All right, pastor Jobe, welcome back to the Lion Within Us. How are you doing today?
Pastor Joby Martin:Doing great. How about you?
Chris Grainger:Yeah, well, I've been better. I broke my ankle on July 26th, so I've been struggling, to be honest, but we're getting there doing what?
Pastor Joby Martin:what were you doing?
Chris Grainger:cutting trees big limb. A big limb broke loose on a big pecan tree on my farm and and knocked me from behind and knocked my bone off my ankle. So, uh, it's been interesting. So at your, at your conference, I'll be there, but I'll be hopping around a little bit. You're gonna be on one of those little one-legged scooter things.
Pastor Joby Martin:No, I'm, hopefully I'll be there, but I'll be hopping around a little bit. You going to be on one of those little one-legged scooter things?
Chris Grainger:No, hopefully I'll be out of a scooter by then. I'm on a scooter right now, but it's been challenging. I'm going to be honest. It's been some depression, just some struggle. Moments when you can't be the dad that you're called to be and the husband you're called to be on the farm, and now the kids are having to pick up. It's been a little bit of a season.
Pastor Joby Martin:Yeah, yeah, it'll teach you how fragile we actually are.
Chris Grainger:You got that right, you got that right. So yeah, other than that, man, it's been gravy Yikes.
Pastor Joby Martin:Well, I hope you heal up fast.
Chris Grainger:I appreciate that. How's life been for you? I know we've worked together three other times, but what's new in in pastor Joby's world?
Pastor Joby Martin:Life is good, man. Um, I have a wife that loves me and probably the best thing, uh, third John, verse four. You know there's only one chapter in third John. I don't think everybody ever really reads it. But the fourth verse of 3, john says I have no greater joy than this, than to hear my children are walking in the truth. Now think about this. Think about who wrote that. That dude did the Last Supper with Jesus. That dude handed out the fish and the loaves. That dude was on the Mount of Transfiguration.
Pastor Joby Martin:Right, john gets a revelation from the resurrected, ascended Christ and writes down the consummation of the kingdom come forever. And obviously John would say that his love of Christ is preeminent in all things. But all the earthly things, he says, that bring him the greatest joy is to know that his children are walking in the truth. And so that's it. Man, I mean church is better than it's ever been. But I can't even I don't have words to describe what a distant second the church of 1122 is, to how grateful I am to God for my wife and two kids.
Chris Grainger:Yeah, and then I see, recently was Reagan, recently got baptized.
Pastor Joby Martin:Yeah, yeah, she did. I mean, she's been walking with the Lord for a while, but she got baptized real young and we were at camp and she was just like dad. I feel like I didn't really know what I was doing, even though she did. It was a moment for her, for sure, to draw a line in the sand and declare you know, her walk with Christ. And so, instead of arguing about it, I just said just get the shirt on, let's go. And yeah, it was great.
Chris Grainger:Man, that's awesome. That's awesome. Well, it sounds like things are going great for you, definitely so happy for what you got going. Then 1122 at home as well, and I mean the fourth book's out, working with Charles. I got a chance to work with Charles. I don't know if I told you so I get why you like working with him so much.
Pastor Joby Martin:He's a great guy, he's the best. I mean, he's one of my Mac carriers. He's a I don't even know, I don't even have a good category for what he is to me. You know a brother, a friend, a fellow pastor, a co-laborer, a hunting buddy, a neighbor. I mean that guy's getting easier to write these books with him. Yeah, it is. I mean, you know, we kind of got quite the groove. We're working on number five right now.
Chris Grainger:Right, that's awesome, that is so awesome Well I mean that's great. I mean I know this has been this focus this year for you and 1122 has been on men and but I'm super curious, like what the ladies are, how that response has been from. You guys have a lot of female listeners and attenders and church members, so just curious what you're hearing there.
Pastor Joby Martin:So in the first weekend of January that I preach you know kind of based on the calendar, but the first weekend of our year I stand in front of our church and hand them a vision piece to say here's what we're doing, here's where we're going, here's what we're studying, here's where we're going, here's what we're studying. Here are the big events that you just can't miss. You should schedule your whole year around what's happening, what the Lord's doing here, and then, historically, I just tell them what the goal, what the focus is for the year. And so in January I stood up and said this year we're going to call men to stand up and act like men, Because when men lead and love well, everybody flourishes.
Pastor Joby Martin:I have had exactly zero complaint emails from the women of 1122. Literally zero. I've gotten nothing but encouragement Because, first of all, honestly, the ladies at our church and most churches, they're just smart enough to connect the dots on whatever we're teaching. You know and it's not like I'm only talking to dudes all year, I mean so we studied 1 Timothy Titus, we did a series on discipleship, we did a series called In the Arena, where we just looked at fights in the Bible, and now we're studying the life of Elijah. Okay, so you just teach the Bible.
Pastor Joby Martin:But the women of 1122 understand that, uh, men and women were are meant to compliment one another, not compete against one another, and the women here are um so humble and so dialed in. They know that if the men will just stand up and act like men, everybody wins. There's not a woman that I know that doesn't want some man to do what Jesus told him to do, whether it's a son or a husband or a dad or a friend or a co-worker or a potential husband. And so the women of 1122 are incredible and, honestly I'm going to have to be honest, Chris what do you think you think the problem at church is that women aren't doing what they're supposed to do?
Chris Grainger:No bro.
Pastor Joby Martin:Go to a prayer meeting. Look at the response time at the altar. Is it full of men or women? Look at the worship. Look at who's worshiping, leading in worship I don't mean the people on stage I'm talking about. So you know, they know, they know and so. But that's the. A godly woman knows that when a man takes his rightful place, something in the air shifts man. Like when a godly man acts like a godly man, people don't feel scared or scarce. They feel safe and cared for and so that's the feedback we get.
Chris Grainger:So good, so good. Well, just hats off for the way you've leaned into it, and I mean the sermons each week. When I think you can't get any better, you just drop fire. And then brit I don't know what brit's been eating lately, but when he's when he's on, he's on, he has been on point has it's been incredible? I think that's on you. I know it's been incredible.
Pastor Joby Martin:I think that's on you, britt's always been incredible. I just think that people are understanding. You know, like you just kind of your expectations have changed and you've gotten, you've grown, you've learned to hear a new voice. Fair enough, I mean, if Britt was the lead preacher all the time and I filled in, people would skip past me every week. I'm telling you yeah, fair enough, a lead pastor for a long time. He planted the Austin Stone Church and is one of the best preachers in the country. He's a part of the team now too.
Pastor Joby Martin:Get ready for some even more goodness on 1122.
Chris Grainger:I'm curious for this episode too, for our listeners to learn about Dr Paul. I've heard you talk about him. He's in the book. I just want to give him a little spotlight here. I mean, would you mind just sharing a little bit about Dr Paul?
Pastor Joby Martin:Yeah, Dr Paul Larson is one of the founding elders of 1122. He turned 91 this week.
Chris Grainger:This week, no kidding.
Pastor Joby Martin:Yeah, 91. So he's a very, very accomplished man. He was the dean of the School of Medicine at LSU, like probably in the 70s, maybe 80s, I don't know. He started to so. Anyway, he's a neuroscientist I used to do brain surgery and stuff like that and he's just a godly guy. He's going to Malawi on a mission trip like in two weeks and he's standing up a medical clinic there. And he's going to malawi on a mission trip like in two weeks and he's standing up a medical clinic there and he's just on the go.
Pastor Joby Martin:I think a part of the reason that he has the life that he has is because he didn't quit. I think a bunch of old men I don't know if there's old men listening just don't stop, man, don't stop, don't worship comfort. Part of the reason old people die is because they're dumb kids. Don't let them do the things that keep people alive. And if you worship at the altar of comfort, there's nothing more comfortable than a casket and that's where your life will go. In fact, I got real sideways with our elders. I am under the authority of a board of elders here and years ago, like seven years ago, they wanted me to tell Dr Paul he couldn't go on mission trips anymore because he's getting too old and I was like what you scared? He's going to die. Newsflash, he's going to die. Would you rather him die in Africa on the mission field or like laid up in a nursing home? Just he, he has earned it. He can do whatever he wants to do. And so you know, they finally came around to see the way I see it. But he's a stud man he's. How about this for a compliment? We were he. You know he's a part of the team that does like my annual evaluation, and a few years ago I guess the church was about five years old at that point, so that would have been eight years ago or something and he says to me in my evaluation thanks for the best five years of my life. That he would say, of all the things that he's ever been a part of, it's these last few years that he's had the most meaning, he's had the biggest impact, that God used him in ways that he's never been used before. And so I'll tell you, everybody loves when young families come to their church.
Pastor Joby Martin:At 1122, we started a senior adult ministry to keep that golden generation in the game. You know like you may retire from your vocation, but you never retire from the Great commission and the great commandment, and 11 22 has a ton of I was gonna say gray hairs, but it's led by gray hair. So, um, we got a ton of senior adults that are just they've got, they got resources, they have time, they have experience. I mean, bro, they've been praying longer than you've been alive and it's a real mistake if a church overlooks them. We want to empower them, like something we did this year, which it wasn't my idea. I wish it was my idea, but it was one of the coolest things. So we've got a ministry we call 1825. You know, it's like college career kind of thing, and we paired them up with our senior adult ministry.
Pastor Joby Martin:And we did a midweek Bible study, where I mean we got thousands and thousands of 18, 25 years and they would show up and at every table was led by a senior adult or a senior adult couple. Because all these man, all these 18 year olds, you know what they want, they want a granddad.
Pastor Joby Martin:And with our mobile society. You know nobody like lives multi-generational anymore with their people, and so they were. You know they're able to share experience and wisdom with these kids and these kids give these old folks like life and vibrancy and and uh, and you know it breaks down a lot of barriers because you know every 18, every 18-year-old thinks every 80-year-old is just I don't know what they think about them and most 80-year-olds think the 18-year-olds are idiots.
Chris Grainger:That's right.
Pastor Joby Martin:And then they find out they actually are idiots, but they're lovely little idiots that we can help. You know, train and aim and guide, so it helps.
Chris Grainger:I think that's where a lot of churches miss it, because it's all about age and stage and keeping the ages and stages together. But this is the beauty of what you're doing there, because that brings in that knowledge and wisdom and gives that older generation a sense of purpose too. So man hats off for whoever thought of that one. That's incredible.
Pastor Joby Martin:That's cool, I love it, I love it.
Chris Grainger:Amen, amen. Well, I thought something interesting when I was going through the book. I mean, stand firm, act like me and guys when this is that when this drops, it's live. So so go get a copy of it. But you start talking about guys avoid risking failure, and why guys do that. They don't want to, they don't want to risk failing anything, and I just want to just give you a place just to kind of expand on that.
Pastor Joby Martin:Yeah, I mean, we were created as image bearers of God. Now, I guess, technically, god can't take a risk, right, because he knows he's sovereign over all things and he knows there is no future for God. He knows, but from our perspective, god looks at a sinful, rebellious people and sends his only begotten son on a rescue mission for us. Right, and again, this is just from our perspective, and so God has put this thing in us where we're like risk taking is biblical and for too long we've worshiped as the idol of comfort and safety and control and certainty. Well, I mean, that might be the, the american dream, but that is not the biblical standard for manhood. I mean, look what god does.
Pastor Joby Martin:God tells abraham when he was old hey, man, pack up, let's go where I'll let you know. And he goes. He tells moses I want you to go, put your finger in the chest of the pharaoh and say let my people go. Well, what's gonna happen, bro, we'll see. Right, jesus shows up on the scene and stands right before pilot and he and and he's like the only reason you get to stand in this kind of authority is because I, I gave you that authority.
Pastor Joby Martin:He sends out the 72 and he's like this world's gonna hate you, but don't worry, I'm with you. Then he sends us all out on the great commission and says I mean they might try to kill you. So what? Don't fear the person that can only crush your body, but fear the one that's in control of your soul. Risk-taking is a biblical value. This is why men feel alive even when they feign risk. You know what I mean. Like you go on a whatever a camping trip, a hunting trip, a surf trip, whatever when you put yourself out there in things that feel a little risky, this is why a part of you comes alive, because that's a part of the character and nature of God that we reflect, coming alive in us.
Chris Grainger:That's great stuff there. I mean, I think when I was kind of digging through here a couple of things as you from that that risk taking you led to five factors and I started looking and I'm like this is why I don't take a lot of risk right here. But you talk about pride, worry, laziness, isolation and lust. They pull us away from doing what God's calling us to do. And I'm just curious. I mean, you meet with a lot of guys, you got a lot of influence, guys you know really follow you and just the impact you're having is huge. Out of those five areas, do you see, is there any one that's a bigger stumbling block? Or is it just like most guys are five for five across the board?
Pastor Joby Martin:here. No, it's different, I mean. So a part of that. 1 Corinthians 16, 13 starts out be watchful, or watch out, or stand watch, that's actually a military term, you know. Like I'm like hey, chris, it's your turn. It's your turn on watch, to defend, to protect, right. So the enemy is trying to take you out, right, john 10, 10, the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. Why? Because if he takes you out, then by definition the ones that you are to defend are defenseless.
Pastor Joby Martin:Well, peter, in first peter 5 is talking to the men of the church, he's talking to elders, so this is specific to men. And he says watch out. Like wake up and dude, the devil doesn't care how he kills you. Like, when you go bass fishing or whatever kind of fishing, do you care what lure works? No, you just want to catch fish, that's it. So he doesn't care. If it's anxiety, if it's busyness, if it's isolation, if it's lust, he doesn't care. And if one lure doesn't work, he'll just clip that one off and retie on another one and throw it your way.
Pastor Joby Martin:And so I just wanted to wake men up and realize, bro, we're not just talking about you and your personal relationship with Jesus, that your family, your grandchildren's lives depend on you being on that wall and standing on that wall, and God has orchestrated it so that we would be called to be on that wall, and it's I mean, listen, man, the Bible is not an old book, it's a timeless book. It doesn't just tell you what used to happen, it tells you what always happens, right, right and 2000 years ago, the same warning that Peter is giving to the men at his church. Uh, it's, it's still applicable today 100%, 100%.
Chris Grainger:I mean, uh, this has been something that's been. When I look at the way he's tripped me up. You talk about the different lures. I mean it's such a great analogy and I just think so many guys we just got to lean into it and recognize that we're in a fight. I think that's why I like to fight in the arena series so much, because so many guys just don't even know they're in a fight. You're getting sucker punched.
Pastor Joby Martin:I'm like bro, what it? Yeah, dude, you're the sucker. If you don't know, punches are happening and you get hit. You're the sucker, right? I mean, I said it before you know, I obviously love to hunt. You see all kind of animals behind me. I think it's funny when they call it a sport, because none of those guys knew that the game was on right, that's right, like that elk.
Pastor Joby Martin:He thought he was going to dinner. He didn't know it was dinner at my house. And if you don't realize that you have a spiritual enemy, the devil, who only wants to kill, steal and destroy, then you're gonna lose man. The first time it hit me was uh, uh, stolts and nitson's uh gulag archipelago. I mean, he's not even I don't know if he's a believer or not, but he was talking about how the, the uh russian police were scooping up unaware citizens and putting them in the gulag.
Pastor Joby Martin:Well, the person that has predetermined that you're going to fight is always going to win the fight. If you wait to put on the spiritual armor when the bullets are flying, you're dead. I mean, can you imagine Obviously I'm a big Georgia Bulldog fan. Can you imagine if Gunnar Stockman doesn't put on his shoulder pads until the kickoff, like while the ball's in the air? You're dead. I don't care how good you are, that's the average American church going man. Like you think Netflix is just for entertainment. You don't think that the devil of hell is trying to kill your kids? And I can tell you, like we're. You know oftentimes, here's, here's what's going to happen, here's how you get taken off that wall. Here's how you get lulled to sleep Ready.
Pastor Joby Martin:You're sitting on your couch watching Fox news every night, right, and you're yelling at the TV because you've got opinions on on Israel and Ukraine and the southern border right, and you're yelling about the southern border and do you have whatever opinions you want. That's not what I mean. Meanwhile, your teenage kids are getting discipled by demons by their ipad in their room. You can't lock down the own borders of your own house. You're toast bro. Bro, be watchful, wake up.
Pastor Joby Martin:And what's crazy about that is you actually feel virtuous because you have godly opinions about things that you have zero influence over? Right, okay, like, whatever, pick one that there should be no debate on if you're a Christian, okay, so you've got a godly opinion about the right to life. You know what I mean? Okay, like, whatever, pick one that there's should be no debate on if you're a christian. Okay, so you've got. You got a godly opinion about the right to life. You know what I mean, sure, and so you're yelling at the tv about that. But you're not doing anything to train your children up on how to honor one another and you're letting them be discipled by tiktok or disney. That, okay, you gotta wake up, man. The devil's gonna eat your lunch. That's what I mean is?
Chris Grainger:is that kind of like directly tied to spiritual passivity? Because I mean, I see so many guys are just passive in this area, man, they just want to completely outsource it to a pastor or a youth pastor, or think that you can check that box about one hour on a sunday and it's like no bro, like this is your job yeah, I think, mean I say this in the book a bunch.
Pastor Joby Martin:I heard of the Scottish proverb while I was in Scotland for every mile of road there's two miles of ditch. So the two ways you can get this thing wrong. The Bible says this is what it means to be a man to be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all you do be done in love. Okay, that's what it means Bend your knee to Jesus, have the Spirit of God fill you and then follow in his footsteps. That's how to be a man.
Pastor Joby Martin:One ditch is abdication. That's what Adam did. There's a freaking snake talking to your wife, bro Stomp its head, but he stands there silent. But then the other ditch and honestly, chris, my guess is a lot of your listeners are going to have a tendency to fall into this one, and it's just to be overly aggressive in external ways but not embody the character nature of christ. Like you, like I think oh, I'm a man because I drive a harley and I got muscles and got a tattoo and I got more guns than I have fingers. That does not make you a man, I mean, it makes you awesome, but not a man.
Pastor Joby Martin:And so what we're not trying to do is have dudes just beat their chest and, you know, kind of andrew tate and stand up and and abuse people or commodify other people. But it's to be like Christ, to be servants, to be prophet, priest, servant, king, provider and protector. This is what the Scriptures call us to, and so some people are. You know, they abdicate their responsibility, kind of like Ahab or Obadiah does in 1 Kings. The other extreme is, honestly, to be like Jezebel and try to manipulate other people by your strength to get what you want. Neither of these are godly. We are called to walk in the Holy Spirit, which is to bend your knee to Christ and act like him. Amen, amen. Need of Christ and act like him, amen.
Chris Grainger:Amen. Well, I'm curious, too, one thing when I was working through the book and thinking something that you just called out and maybe this will resonate with some of the guys that are listening but for the longest time I struggled thinking that I needed to be a five-talent guy. Like I got to be a five-talent guy, I want to be a five-talent guy. Like I got to be a five-talent guy, I want to be a five-talent guy. And I diminished the two-talent guy. And then God, I was actually in the woods and God revealed to me like hey, you're a two-talent guy and I just I'm kind of I'm good with that now, but I feel like so many guys, they would not accept being a two-talent guy. Being a two-talent guy, I don't know.
Pastor Joby Martin:What's your reflection on that? I think the two-talent guy is actually the hero of the story because he spends zero time comparing himself to either the one or five-talent guy. He just does what the master tells him to do and he receives the same reward as the five-talent guy. Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your master. And so, honestly, I don't think you know, until you get to the throne room, I don't know.
Pastor Joby Martin:I refuse to be a one talent guy. I'm not going to take what God's given me and hide it and be and be ruled by fear. But, dude, I don't know, cause you know, I think we should spend zero time comparing what God is doing in our life to anybody else, because the master in that parable spends zero time comparing them to one another. He only holds them accountable to what he told them to do. So that's going to be me and you, man. We're going to stand before our maker and he's not going to compare me and you to one another, he's just going to one. We get the imputed righteousness of Christ. So we get the well-done, good and faithful servant, not because of anything that we have done, but because of what Christ has done for us. But there is a second judgment where every word that we speak we're held accountable for and every good and godly thing we're rewarded for, and so that matters, like what we do on this planet matters.
Chris Grainger:That's wild. Like you mentioned, dr Paul is 91, but my mentor is 86. Young man and we meet every week and he reminds me every week about the Bema Seat. He's like, hey, this is a big deal. He's like preachers ain't talking about this. Now, you talk about stuff like that a lot, but very rarely are they talking about the beam of seed of judgment. And I just think that's a good for me, it's a good reframe and a good reminder that, yeah, man, what we do here matters, it's not just going to be forgot.
Pastor Joby Martin:Here's how I, on my best days, here's how I try to make decisions, okay, I mean, unless the scripture explicitly says it. Oftentimes, you know, there's a there can be a little bit of ambiguity about do I turn left, do I turn right? You know, do we plan a campus here or there? Or if I'm this has happened so many times I'm standing in Walmart in line and I don't know how to explain it. I just feel this nudge. Talk to the person in front of you. All right, is that from God or not from God? I don't know. How do you know? You can make some stuff up.
Pastor Joby Martin:So then I imagine one day I'm going to stand before the great white throne of judgment and let's just say I made that up and I'm giving an account for my life, and god's like I didn't tell you to talk to that guy in walmart and I go okay, well, I thought you might have. So, my bad, I think I'm still good. Yeah, right, right, but what I refuse to do is he go. Why didn't you talk to the guy in walmart? Man? You know, I told you to. So, as long as it's in alignment with the scriptures, on my best days, when I feel a nudge of the Holy Spirit. I just want to do what he tells me to do, and if I'm not sure, I think about it that way. What story do I want to tell God one day when I'm giving an account for my life?
Chris Grainger:Yeah, you know, we worked together, I think three years ago. Now, that's what you left me with and that has probably been the biggest impact Cause I asked you. I'm sure you don't remember, but you were just like. It's very simple Do whatever he tells you to do, and that yeah.
Chris Grainger:And I've. I have poured that into so many other guys now and I give you credit Most of the time. I always give back to Pastor Joe because it's like this is it? Just simply take the step of obedience. Quit being passive. If you get the nudge, if you're wrong, you're wrong, but I'd rather just make that mistake and clear it up in heaven.
Pastor Joby Martin:Well, think about the number of miracles Like if you you know, I did a book on miracles and as I was studying that for that one, the majority of the New Testament miracles are accompanied by an act of faith by the recipient of the miracle. Right like the four dudes have to carry the guy to the house and tear a hole in the roof, the woman with the issue of blood fights through the crowd, the John 9, the blind guy goes and washes his face. In the book of Acts, peter and John are on their way to the temple. The guy asks for money and Peter very famously says Silver and gold have I? None, but what I have I give to you In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, arise and walk.
Pastor Joby Martin:But he didn't arise when he said it. Then the Bible says he reached out his hand to the man, then his ankles were strengthened and he stood up. See, so faith is acting as if you actually believe that God is faithful to his promises. So I wonder how many miracles are still sitting on the sidewalk because people didn't do what God told them to do? Or in John chapter two, they run out of wine at the wedding of Cana and Mary gathers the servants together and says well, you just quoted, do whatever he tells you to do. Well, the next four things he told him to do make no sense in the natural.
Chris Grainger:None.
Pastor Joby Martin:And yet we're still talking about that miracle. And so in 2012, when my lead, when my senior pastor, jerry Sweat, says I think it's time to plant a church, with you as the senior pastor, I don't make no sense. Jacksonville's got so many churches, man, and little did we know that all of this hung in the balance of just putting our yes on the table 13 years ago. Yeah, man, so that's it. That's part of what it means to be a man is to stand firm in the faith. See the opposite. I've talked about this all the time.
Pastor Joby Martin:The opposite of faith is not doubt. If you've got doubts and unanswered questions, cool, follow Jesus. But the opposite of faith is fear. That's what happens to the one talent guy. He says I was afraid, so I went and hid what you gave me. And Jesus calls him wicked and slothful, because faith produces action, fear paralyzes. That's the difference. Faith is looking into the future and believing that God is in control. Fear is looking into the future and believing that God is in control. Fear is looking into the future and only seeing your circumstances. That's the difference. So Charles Stanley used to say something like fate is if God tells you to run your head through that brick wall. You better start running and trust him for the whole.
Chris Grainger:That's fate, that's it, that's it Well in preparing for this. So we you know the Lion we've built some pretty cool things since we started several years ago. And I always ask our guys I'm like, look, I'm getting ready to meet with Pastor Joby, what do you want me to ask him? And one of these questions is, I feel like just it's a good time to ask it because this guy is struggling. And he was like, hey, you want to know, pastor Joby, what do you do when you sought God's? Will you pray? You guess you go and things just seem hard and like you're making no progress. Like what would you? How would you answer?
Pastor Joby Martin:that guy? Well, I w well. Where in the world did you come up with the idea that easy equals his will? I mean, show me one place in the Bible where it was easy. So he's sovereign, he's in charge, and I mean all over the scriptures. Right, joseph? He's doing God's will. God gives him a vision, he shares it with his brothers. He gets beaten up, gets sold into slavery, gets accused of a crime that he didn't commit, gets forgotten in prison. So does that look like God's will? Is God into human trafficking and domestic violence and false imprisonment and forgetting people? And yet we all know. By the end of it he says to his brothers am I not in the place of God? What you intended for evil? God intended for good? Or the place? The place is.
Pastor Joby Martin:You got to look at the cross, like all right, if you didn't know the end of the events, all right. And you're standing at the foot of Golgotha 2,000 years ago on Good Friday and there's the Son of God dead. Wouldn't you think God has lost control? Like all right, lord, if it's your will, then why didn't you open the door, right? I mean, jesus asked this in the Garden of Gethsemane. Father, if there be any other way. Let this cup pass from me, not my will, but thy will be done okay. And we know this has been the ultimate plan from before the beginning. So if you seek God's will and you pursue him and you do what he says, one if you're wrong about it, just trust he'll send a big fish to swallow you up and puke you out wherever you need to be. Anyway, right, and God is in control and he is at work in all things for the good of those, for the good of those that love him and are called according to his purpose. So if it ain't good, he's not done. That's what you have to see. And listen, man. Sometimes it goes good.
Pastor Joby Martin:Read Hebrews. Hebrews is like, hey, man, for some people it was awesome. Some people got their children, were brought back to life and they shut the mouths of lions, and some people trampled armies. And then there's not even like, there's not even a period and a new sentence, and it's like and some were sawn in two, some were burned at the stake and they were. They're all in the same paragraph of faithfulness. So you can't be looking at the results, you just. You gotta be trusting God with what he's called you to do. Amen.
Chris Grainger:The next question one of our guys want to know is he's he's got a couple of kids and he want to know how you taught your kids to embrace God as their strength and comfort, because he's trying to. He's trying to do that in his own home. So any advice there for a young, young father. How old are the kids?
Pastor Joby Martin:These kids are like three and five, good, ok so attribute every good experience and every good thing that they have to the heavenly father, like they should associate whatever, whatever they're into sunrise, you know, whatever pretty weather just be like.
Pastor Joby Martin:Look how. Look how good god is to us, that he's a good dad, he loves to give good gifts to his kids and then then things, when things hurt, then let him know God is so good he sent Jesus to a broken world to redeem all of these things, that one day there's no tears because he's going to make all things new. So it's very, very simple, you know, the key is to try to help your kids understand fundamentally that God is not like a father, that God is father and that he sent his son to die for us and that he sent his spirit to live in us. But if you understand the father heart of God, that's when things can begin to make more sense. And I know it's an old like cliche preacher thing, so that when you can't see his hand you can still trust his heart. You can trust that he's good because of the cross and the empty tomb.
Chris Grainger:Okay, one of our guys wanted to know have you ever dealt with imposter syndrome? And, if so, you know, what would you suggest for guys that do struggle with this? Sorry for the randomness. These guys are just all over the place with wanting to ask some of these questions.
Pastor Joby Martin:No, no, I get it all the way. Okay, imposter syndrome wouldn't be the right word for me. I I'm overwhelmed with God's goodness in my life and I know I don't deserve it, but on the other hand, there's no doubt in my mind that God has appointed and anointed me for such time as this. So both of those things can be true at the same time, all right. So years ago, like 12 years ago, we just planted the church. It blew up real fast, got real big, real fast and I got invited to be around.
Pastor Joby Martin:A bunch of seasoned pastors Me, there's about 10 of us got invited to be in this group and we were all in our thirties and we were all pastoring what people would qualify as mega churches. I hate, I don't love that phrase. I don't know who made that phrase up so dumb. I mean, jacksonville has almost 2 million people, so if we got 30,000 people at our church, we're not even making a dent. Man, I live in a mega lost city anyway. That's a different subject. So these so these veteran guys are are like pouring into. A bunch of us got big churches and we're in our 30s.
Pastor Joby Martin:And this guy named wayne cordera he wrote uh, leading on empty and sifted, wrote a bunch, a bunch of great books, pastor's a great church in hawaii. So we were at his. He's got a house in oregon. We were at his house in Oregon and at the break he started asking me about 1122. And I didn't want to boast in myself or anything, so I just kind of hemmed and hawed and be like you know, I'm just a redneck from Dillon, I don't know what I'm doing. We just got an old country church in Walmart, you know.
Pastor Joby Martin:And he put his hand on my shoulder and he quoted second Samuel five, 12. Here's what it said and David knew that the Lord had established him King over Israel and that he had exalted his kingdom for the sake of the people of Israel. So David knew that God decided David would be King and it wasn't for David's sake, it was for the sake of the glory of God by serving the people, amen. Then he puts his hand on my shoulder and he said don't ever apologize for the Lord's anointing, just walk in it. And that's it. So I can take credit for this, you know. But I also know that this is what God has called me to do.
Chris Grainger:Right.
Pastor Joby Martin:And so I work real hard, I prepare and I just do what he's called me to do. And you know, when God uses you for something so much bigger than yourself, you know, like I said in the grace train man, when a mosquito grabs hold of a freight train, the mosquito does not feel bigger, it's just holding on for dear life. I'm just holding on for dear life. But when I'm leading our teams or when I'm standing up there preaching, I also know that I didn't pick me for this. God picked me for this. So it can be an affront against God if you don't believe the calling that he has on your life. So again, Wayne Cordera said never apologize for the anointing, Just walk in it. Amen.
Chris Grainger:Love it. One of our guys is actually paralyzed from neck down and he shows up to our meetings. I mean, he works his iPad, he's got these glasses he can work his iPad with, and stuff like that. He's all in for the gospel. He actually does prison ministry. You can probably appreciate that. He goes and shares his story and his testimony with guys. He had a question, though, that he was hoping to get your insight on, and he was like hey, I'm trying to do the right stuff. I'm feeling pretty distant from God. Um, when you, what do you do when you feel like you aren't being filled with the Holy Spirit, you don't have any peace and you just can't find the joy. What do you tell guys in those moments? Cause that's where he's been struggling a lot lately.
Pastor Joby Martin:Well, some of that language matters, okay. That's where he's been struggling a lot lately. Well, some of that language matters, okay. So, uh, the the bible tells us that when he put his faith in jesus christ, he was filled with the holy spirit. He was immersed in the holy spirit that. So he doesn't need any more spirit he needs. The question is, does the spirit have all of him? And, uh, hebrews tells us that we should. You know, we should fix our eyes on jesus, the author and the perfecter of our fate.
Pastor Joby Martin:So what are you need to do? The things in your life that stir your affections for the lord. That's going to be some combination of god's presence, god's people and god's, god's word. All right, so are you doing these things? You could also look at John 15, where Jesus says abide in me and I'll abide in you. Apart from me, you can do nothing. And it's almost like the disciples are looking at him side-eyed like how do we do that? And he goes abide in my word and I will abide in you. James 4, 8, was this incredible promise draw near to me and I will draw near to you. But it will never be enough to just do the things that stir your affection.
Pastor Joby Martin:Hebrews says that we need to throw off anything that hinders and and lay aside the sin that entangles. So, if there's, because these things are going to kill your affections and relationship with the Lord. But he gives two categories there. Some things aren't sinful, they're just stupid. So the number of people I hear say the same kind of thing, I just hadn't felt the Lord in a while. I'm like, yeah, but you've been on Instagram for like seven hours today, right, those things are going to have a hard time coexisting and so, make sure anything that hinders your walk with him you should get rid of it for a season or maybe forever, and for sure you should ask God to reveal to you any sin that is separating you from him emotionally. But then, in addition to that, you've also got to do the things that stir your affections for the Lord.
Pastor Joby Martin:And again, that's a combination of God's presence. That's like corporate worship, corporate prayer. This is why going to church matters so much. This is why we should never give up on gathering together with the saints, right, because God's presence manifests differently than his omnipresence, like the Bible says that God inhabits the praises of his people, those kinds of things. So there's God's presence. There's God's people. You need some other brothers Sometimes, when I mean, think about this man, mark chapter two.
Pastor Joby Martin:Dude's on the mat, his four buddies pick him up, carry him into Jesus. This kind of messed with your theology a little bit. The Bible says that Jesus sees the faith of the friends and looks at the dude on the mat and says your sins are forgiven. Have you surrounded yourself with the kind of men when you need to borrow some of their faith? They've got so much that they've got enough to lend out. Does that make sense? Amen. So you need some God's people, like some of it could be shoulder to shoulder on mission. Some of it needs to be face to face, like sharpening one another. And then there's got to be God's word. I just don't know the person that's in a deep, abiding walk with Jesus that does not love the word of God. That's all in on the word of God, amen.
Pastor Joby Martin:And then also man. It's a relationship with the Lord, just like every relationship. I've been married to Gretchen for 25 years. Sometimes we feel so close. I think we can like think each other's thoughts. Sometimes we walk by the hallway, we don't even look at each other because you know, it's kind of dry, and so your current feelings about a relationship do not determine not a godly relationship, because you've made a covenant with that person. Well, god made a covenant with you and so, regardless of what you feel like, he's as close as you will. Let him be.
Chris Grainger:Amen. Well, thank you for that, pastor Joe. The last one from our guys, kind of a little bit of a lighter one to end with with their questions, is what's your latest tattoo and what's the next one on your wish list?
Pastor Joby Martin:We were, I think, my last one. I got a big shirt on right now, but I got the God's hand touching Adam's finger, like at the top of the Sistine Chapel. So Gretchen and I were in Rome a couple months ago and yeah, so I got that just to remind me of that trip. We went to see where, like you know, peter was in prison and Paul was beheaded and some of those kind of things, and so while in Rome, I got that one just to remind me of God's outstretched hand towards his people. Yeah, it's awesome.
Pastor Joby Martin:My next one is I got a little bit of sleeve work to do and then I think I'm going to do a big chest piece where I do a, you know, the Trinity symbol, right, it's like three parts, it's kind of like upside down Mickey mouse ears Right, and uh, on the bottom two I'm going to do I think I'm going to do, uh, a clock and a compass and then a crown on the top of it, because, because God is the Lord of time and space, and I think I'm going to do that one on my chest. And then I got an idea for a black and gray over here, like a big angel shooting a bow, with Psalm 127 in it.
Chris Grainger:No Harley ones on the queue. Huh, Harley tattoos yeah. No, I just ride the harley I hear you, bro, what's the number one tattoo brand in the world. So I didn't know if you uh, that was gonna be on the works mine, most of mine are.
Pastor Joby Martin:You know they're about. Most of mine are just about the lord and you know significant things that he's done in my life there you go.
Chris Grainger:That's awesome. Well, thank you for for working through those for those guys, man, I know that's going to be big for them and definitely great insights, and we always like to do, if you remember, like a lightning round. At the end, I came up with some fun ones here. Hopefully you'll enjoy them, and we'll kind of do this before we put the horse in the barn.
Pastor Joby Martin:So first one. I think I know about going to ask coffee or sweet tea, man, coffee, coffee, black, though right, I just yeah, black coffee I'm trying to. You know, sugar will kill you, man, so I got to quit doing that.
Chris Grainger:That's right. So well, I know you're from Georgia, but you're in Florida. So what's the most Florida thing you've ever done, brother, but you're in Florida.
Pastor Joby Martin:So what's the most Florida thing you've ever done? Brother, Catch an alligator.
Chris Grainger:Really, and you still got all ten fingers.
Pastor Joby Martin:You must have been pretty good at it. Yeah, man, you know, just like the football team, it's all mouth. You just tire them out a little bit and they're not too bad. You can tape up and take them home. That's a basketball school now, isn't it? That's right.
Chris Grainger:That's right. Like up here in Carolina, it's all about everybody toss back Duke. So the joke is like Duke's got football. So you know anyway. Yeah.
Pastor Joby Martin:What's the strangest thing that's ever happened? Mid-sermon man, I don't. Uh, strangest thing, mid sermon. Um, oh, this was cool. Uh, I don't know when this is coming out, but when I was teaching through, uh, the life of Elijah, it was a Thursday night service and and I'm in the text where Elijah tells or God tells Elijah that the rain is going to turn back on, and just then the bottom drops out and you can hear the rain pouring down on the roof and I'm, you know, we got a big old auditorium and I stopped. I was like, is it raining? And everybody just started screaming Like it was like a special effects that we had worked on or something. So that that was pretty cool.
Chris Grainger:That is pretty cool. Outside of Jesus, who in the Bible would you like to go fishing with first?
Pastor Joby Martin:Definitely not the disciples, because there's not one account of them catching a fish without a miraculous touch of Jesus. You ever notice that, right? Yeah, they're pretty bad at it. Let's see, I don't know Elijah. I think I'd like to go with Elijah, okay, I mean, think about this. Like he comes out of nowhere, he lives in the woods and he's one of the few people that are both Old and New Testament. You know, like God used him in such a way that John the Baptist is said to have walked in the spirit of Elijah, and so he seems to me to be like a. I mean, he was a strong man, he was a faithful man, but he was a real man, struggled with depression and, you know, thought Jezebel was going to get him one time, and yet God used him in ways far beyond what he probably thought he was capable of. So I'd probably want to hang out with him, amen.
Chris Grainger:Okay, all right. Who texts you when you look at your phone? Who texts you using the most emojis right now?
Pastor Joby Martin:The elders of my church. Okay, old old guys, dude, old guys love some emojis, like everything they send. It's like praise hands, praise hands, fire, fire, cross, purple bible, purple bible, like you know, just yeah they, they text to be an emoji all right.
Chris Grainger:Well, I didn't see that answer coming, it threw me off. So, uh, what's one of the I'm the worst I'm the worst texter, bro.
Pastor Joby Martin:I'm like my people send a real long thing and I give them the old poop or maybe a k. I'll hit them with a k. I'm the worst I currently have. Let me look right here. If you ever, when you text me and I'll text you back, it's because, as we speak, I have 802 unread texts just a few few, just a few.
Chris Grainger:It's crazy when you think about Reagan and JP, what's the funniest thing they have ever said about your preaching? You think back. Have they ever said anything funny about one of your sermons?
Pastor Joby Martin:Oh my gosh, I don't know. I don't know what that would be whatsoever. I'm just glad they're sitting on the front row taking notes these days. Amen to that.
Chris Grainger:So they, you know, oh, here it is.
Pastor Joby Martin:I remember years ago, when they were a little bit younger, I was like I was just checking to make sure they were kind of getting the age where I felt like I wanted to check in with them if I was going to use them as a sermon illustration. You know, and it's probably JP, he's kind of more of a wheeler dealer and so we had worked it out If I use him as an illustration, I owe him $5, you know. And then about three weeks later JP's like hey, man, what gives? We make this deal and you haven't brought me up one time, so can you throw me in there a couple times so I can make some lunch money.
Pastor Joby Martin:There you go it didn't make them pay attention I mean, they were only listening for their own name but it did make them pay attention.
Chris Grainger:Hey, whatever it takes to get them locked in, you know so that's it. I was thinking about this question because I was thinking about my buddy, Al at Unashamed. I think he went down there and got to meet Phil before he passed as well. What great people. But they made their movie. So if they were to make a movie about 1122, who would you want to play? Joby Martin.
Pastor Joby Martin:There you go. But did you see that? Not because I'm good looking, but you know that one about the the dragon. Did you see him in that one when he grew the big beard and had? The face tattoo yeah and he was bald. Yeah, that version, that version, not the big flowing hair, no, no, no, that that, like whatever that dragon movie was, and the accent would be close enough, you know right, right, there you go, there you go, all right.
Chris Grainger:How about, uh, a book that's had the most influence on you outside the bible? You've named a couple already today, but, uh, anything that just jumped to the top of your head oh gosh, there's a lot.
Pastor Joby Martin:Um, I reread mere Christianity every year. I felt like there's some new stuff there, that that that'd probably be the one. Maybe Piper's don't waste your life. That's another life changing message. There was a bunch of us when we, you know, we were all about 20 years old, when we were 25 years old, when I heard that and it, that really made a difference Right there.
Chris Grainger:There you go Right there, that's it.
Pastor Joby Martin:That's it. I don't get to read nearly as much as I want to, though, because Thursday comes with an amazing regularity, so I'm usually cramming everything I can read about the next, like the upcoming sermon. Does that make sense.
Chris Grainger:It does, it does All right. So let's just do like, let's do two more. So let's see what's the most underrated fast food restaurant in your opinion?
Pastor Joby Martin:Jimmy John's Okay.
Chris Grainger:Didn't see that one coming Fresh and fast. It takes no time to get it. You know that's it, that's it, that's it. How about the most? Uh, what is your most used? Because you got a lot of these jobisms out there now like, yeah, I mean it's, you're kind of racking them up. What's the most used phrase that your church staff uses the most? Maybe they they pick on you with uh, you're too dumb to talk to. Probably that one yeah, I do enjoy when you say when you throw that one out, yeah, that's it.
Pastor Joby Martin:That's I don't. I don't intend to do that man. I just grew up in a country family. This is how country people talk. You know what I mean, hey man.
Chris Grainger:I mean I grew up just just north of you, I mean you're in dillon's. I was just above the virginia line, right on the carolina line yeah so, uh, I get it small town. You know, when I go, when I ride by dillon, I I get, I sense where you, where you're coming from yeah, don't, don't pull over, it'll get on you, that's right, that's right.
Chris Grainger:What do you hope you guys remember the most from our conversation, joey, and also remember you know, get, get the most from you, from uh, stand firm and act like men. What do you hope the the parting message would be for?
Pastor Joby Martin:I hope they'll know jesus better. I mean, that's all. The only reason I'd exist is that the people will know jesus, and if they decide to pick up the book, I mean I hope they will. One of the things that makes this book different is there's a lot of great men's books out there, but most of them are you know. It's like 10 rules to be a man, and some very, very smart person kind of made it up.
Pastor Joby Martin:All I do in this book is just unpack what the Bible says a man is supposed to do and be. So these are not. They're my illustrations and they're some of my personal stories. These are not my ideas. This is just what the Bible says, and if you tether your life to some podcaster or you tether your life to you know eight rules to be a better man, it's going to be pretty shaky. But if you tether your life to the authoritative word of God, then, with the word of God above you as your authority and the spirit of God in you driving you, god will use it like a hammer and a chisel to chisel out everything in you that doesn't look like his son Jesus, and so this book is just to help you do that.
Chris Grainger:Where do you want to send them? Where can they get it? Get the copy. What benefits 1122 the most?
Pastor Joby Martin:You can get it anywhere. You can go to joebremartincom and get it, you can get it at Amazon all the places you can get books. And one of the things about I am primarily a pastor, not primarily an author, and um, so all I'm going to do is give my time to disciple, making efforts, amen. So, um, you know, I've structured this thing in such a way that you can get it at a pretty good price and, you know, if, for some reason, you had a listener that couldn't even afford the whatever it costs, then let me know, we'll get one in your hands.
Chris Grainger:Amen. Well, I also just want to just thank you. You know, just kind of go officially on the record, if you will. You had a massive influence on me, the line within us, a lot of our guys. You know, you took the time and you and your team. We have our first book coming out and, uh, you wrote the forward forward and it's just uh, you know, but god, I mean, I don't understand it, but I just want you to know the work you're doing matters and I know, and they get a lot, of, a lot of heat when you're in a position that you're in sometimes. But uh, we love you, I love you and just praying for you and your family each and every week and, uh, just want to continue to be an encouragement to you thanks, brother, thanks for all that you're doing.
Pastor Joby Martin:Man, just be faithful, uh, just like you are. I pray that. I pray that ankle heals up really, really quick and I pray that you learn a dependence on the father like you haven't learned before, because I know you're an independent guy that likes to get it done. But maybe you'll be able to slow down just enough. Maybe you'll be able to allow some other people to help you and you'll understand. Now You'll understand God not just as Father and King and Creator, but also as Healer.
Chris Grainger:Amen, amen that was funny.
Chris Grainger:I was with my surgeon the other day and she said 10 weeks. And my wife's doing the math, she's like you leave for jobe in 10 weeks. I'm like, hey, I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be there.
