The Lion Within Us - Leadership for Christian Men

505. Compassionate Leadership - Fun Friday

Chris Grainger

Disaster struck Western North Carolina when Hurricane Helene tore through communities, leaving devastation in its wake. This catastrophic event revealed a sobering truth about church disaster response – sometimes well-meaning Christians become what relief expert Daniel calls "the second disaster" after the initial crisis. Despite having compassionate hearts, many volunteers lack the training and coordination needed to truly serve effectively.

Chris Grainger:

Welcome to the Lion Within Us, a podcast serving Christian men who are hungry to be the leaders God intends you to be. I'm your host, chris Granger. Let's jump in. All right, guys, fun Friday time, let's get into it, okay? So the scripture of the week this week is in the book of Luke, chapter 10, verse 37. The expert in the law replied, talking to Jesus, the one who had mercy on him. Jesus told him go and do likewise. So, guys, important scripture for us as Christian men to know first and foremost. And then we need to know how can we apply that. What does that actually mean for our life? I'd encourage you, if you don't know, go back to the Spiritual Kickoff episode It'll be two podcasts back in your podcast feed and listen. Just try to give some practical insights how you can take that, simplify and apply it to your life. That's what it's all about. Again, we do this every day, monday through Friday, within the Lion Within Us community. So, again, go to the lionwithinus If you just need a little boost. Each and every day, we're here. This is what we do. This is how we serve. All right.

Chris Grainger:

Now, our last episode was very powerful because we talked about directly how we should all be united when crisis hit Not if but when, because crisis are all around us. There's people in need at all times. Living in North Carolina, we got to see this firsthand, unfortunately, this year, when Hurricane Helene came through and absolutely just devastated western North Carolina, and we were able to equip and go out and put you know on the plow, if you will, to go do the work that God called us to do, and that was such an important opportunity for us guys and we were able to respond in that way because you know what God. He just made it clear on my heart that you know what you have to step up and what Daniel's doing. He's built an organization to bring churches together so when things do happen, they'll be able to go out and serve in an effective way, not be a hindrance either. Like he actually said, the church's the second disaster that happens after disaster because so many people are not qualified. They don't know what they're doing and maybe they're saying the wrong things or you know just. Sometimes, quite frankly, you're just in the way. I saw this firsthand in Western North Carolina. There was too many people there that had the right heart. They didn't have the skills that were needed to help the people in that moment. So love what Daniel's doing. Obviously, he is an expert in this. This is he dedicated his life to this. Go back and listen to his episode, fellas. Hopefully you'll find some encouragement there. Okay, all right. So now let's for our fun Friday.

Chris Grainger:

We always talk about health, wealth and self tips. Now, health is how do we build stronger minds and bodies to do what God's called us to do? Wealth is how do we be better stewards Remember that word stewards of our finances and ultimately fulfill our careers in a way that honor and glorifies God? Self is how do we equip ourselves to grow as husbands and fathers? That's what it's all about, because if we can do those areas, man, we're going to make a big, big impact. All right, so now for the health tip. Think about this Again the whole idea of serving, serving through your strength.

Chris Grainger:

God gave you a unique ability. First of all, he made you male, right? That means we should take care of our body so that, when things happen, we can go out and we can serve others with absolute dedication. I saw this firsthand A couple of our volunteers one of them was 72 when we went to do our disaster relief trip and every day, for 10 to 12 hours a day. This man's out there running a chainsaw, doing all the heavy lifting, moving logs around, right. But he was in shape, he took care of his body so that when the time came, he stepped up. He absolutely stepped up. So that means sometimes, fellas, we'll have to commit to a routine your regular exercise, cardio, weightlifting, stuff like that that when things do happen, we're physically equipped and ready to meet the demands of the services that are that's in front of us. You know the whole question comes up. You know, if you would have had to run a mile a day for a lower, could you do it? Well, I don't know if God's going to make you run a mile a day, but he may. And if that does happen, are you doing what you need to do right now to be prepared for when that does happen?

Chris Grainger:

For me, I can't say I love running. I like running. I don't love it, but I do it so that when a day comes and I know God's going to call me to do some work, I want to be able to do it and fulfill it, to honor and glorify Him. Now, sometimes, I must admit, I really enjoy being on the trail, but day in, day out, grinding, grinding, like this morning. I'm lifting weights strength training as well and I did not want to lift weights this morning, didn't want to do it. We lift early, it's like quarter to five. It's early, right, we have to do it before we do horse chores. But you know what I'm doing it not because I want to look better in some mirror. No, I want to be able to honor and glorify God and do the things he's called me to do when they come across my plate. And that means I need to put that work in right now. And, guys, that's what we have to do. We have to put the work in so that we'll be ready. All right.

Chris Grainger:

Now, wealth tip that investment in others is such a big deal. Okay, and again, we're talking about stewardship and our time and our money and things like that. But when we invest and we sit down and we help others grow their financial and their general knowledge around finances, it's a big deal. You're making a big kingdom impact, because not many people have the financial mentors that they can trust, that they can rely on. So maybe you're coming along and you're really God's blessed you from an entrepreneurial journey, maybe you're a business owner. Well, find opportunities where you can to seek out and support and help that up and coming entrepreneur who's on their path right. And maybe it could be finding opportunities to get involved in supporting someone financially in a critical moment in their life, maybe paying for their groceries or you're helping to just you pay a light bill for a month. But each time we make that investment in others, we're glorifying God and God's going to multiply that. He's going to bless it 100%. But it's about bringing the right mindset of stewardship into how can I invest what God has given me to others? And if you just bring that to God, I don't know the best way to get to handle the situation, but I know you do. I just want to honor and glorify you. Please show it to me. He's going to show that to you. He will All right. Now self-tip Think about the way that you lead your family.

Chris Grainger:

Again, you've been handpicked by a guy to lead your family you need. We should all strive to model compassion for our kids. They should see that, because kids learn through watching. Let's just be real there. Remember, more is caught than taught. Fellas. They're watching, so they can. If you want compassionate kids. They're going to watch, they're going to learn that the best by seeing how are you compassionate to others.

Chris Grainger:

It's just plain and simple facts. So maybe the whole love thy neighbor you know, we all know what that is in the bible right? Maybe they should actually see you love, you love your neighbor through acts of service to them. Maybe and look, you don't have to get complicated with maybe just go clean the yard out, right, or? Or you go out there and you help them clean the garage, or you just give them a call hey, I'm gonna make a trash. Can I take your trash for you? Simple stuff like that can be such a big deal. And those actions show your kids that you're not just talking out of one side of your mouth and doing something else with the other.

Chris Grainger:

No, no, it all has to come together. You can't say be generous and then you don't. They never see any actual generosity. You know what I'm saying? It doesn't make any sense. So we have to make sure that we're doing what we can to put that in place, to put that in practice, to let our children be part of the journey. And, quite frankly, someone who serves my kids and try to and tries to do this as often as possible. That's where the rubber meets the road the most. It's when they're side by side, they're with dad and they're seeing him do this and, as a leader of your family, which you are, they're relying on you to do this, guys. So, fellas, lean into it. All right. There's your health, wealth and self. Again, quick reminders Serve through strength. Guys, we've got to equip our bodies so that we can go do the hard work, a lot of the work that Daniel talked about. A lot of the work that Daniel talked about. That wealth tip is investing in others, making sure that we're doing all we can to just provide that wisdom, that biblical stewardship, wisdom, insights that he's given us to other people. And then that self tip is modeling that compassion for our families, fellas.

Chris Grainger:

So book of the week this week, obviously, is United in Crisis. Right, here's a copy, fellas. A true story of God's miraculous power working through a united network of churches, by Daniel Go, check this one out. This is a great one. Get this. Here's an idea. Get this book for your pastors or your leaders in your church and just give it to them. Here's a resource I think we may want to consider to look at. I know we want to be proactive in serving others. Have you heard about United in Crisis and what they're doing? You just lay that out there. Maybe your only step in all this is giving the book and giving it to the pastor, and then that's all God's asked you to do. And then, guess what? If that's what he's asked you to do, be obedient in that. Now, if he's asked you to take this and actually apply it, be obedient in that too. All right, all right, fellas.

Chris Grainger:

So let's get to our dad jokes of the week. So we got two dad jokes for you. Dad joke number one why did the baker share his bread? The baker, okay, well, because he needed the help. Get it, needed the help. All right, I guess you have to explain it. Maybe you don't get it, but anyway, that's number one. Number two why don't electricians sit on the sidelines? Hmm, because they know how to conduct themselves. Come on now. Now, as an electrical engineer, I think that was pretty funny, but that's just me. So that's it, number one and number two. Number one why did the baker share his bread? Because he needed the help. Number two why don't electricians sit on the sidelines? Because they know how to conduct themselves.

Chris Grainger:

So, fellas, again, our roles totally count each and every week, and if you have a dad joke that you want us to use that we haven't used yet, support at the lion withinus. Send us that dad joke. We'll give you a free shout out. Well, shout out as well as some free hookups for some some of our material, just for helping us along. How about that? All right, so now, fellas thank you so much for listening Share this stuff out with others, please. That's what that's really how we grow the Lion Within us.

Chris Grainger:

I don't know about you, but I used to find Mondays really rough. I would find myself trying to reset for work, trying to get my bearing on the family calendar, trying to find time for my own spiritual growth and development, and often I found myself overwhelmed or just flatly ignoring aspects of my life that I know are meaningful to me. What I learned was that if I had immediate access to important and impactful spiritual topics and reflections to start my week well. After the allure of a Sunday sermon has passed, I would set my whole week up to be more meaningful and for the opportunity to make a true impact.

Chris Grainger:

If you think that getting such a boost would help your week to get started on the right foot, we would love for you to sign up for the Weekly Roar, which is our newsletter that is produced by the lion within us.
